We're working on a new JSTOR license and as a state institution, we cannot indemnify a publisher or provider. In our negotiations, we've seen four variations on JSTOR asking us - or our Authorized Users - to indemnify JSTOR. I am guessing that their concern about this stems from the Aaron Schwartz/MIT/JSTOR case.

Have any others at state institutions (or otherwise) successfully negotiated out, remained silent, or come up with acceptable language about the institution's or authorized user's indemnification of JSTOR? - Galadriel - - (Edit | Remove)

A nearby public library recently did a big expansion. Apparently, at the grand opening celebration that happened this month, they opened the ceremony with a prayer. Am I the only one thinking OH, HELL NO!

Student workers from Iris' library are presenting about their awesome student worker projects and positions. They are really treated like collaborators & colleagues, given agency and respect.

So, let me get this straight: IT wouldn't let us buy a license for Camtasia, because they said they were about to get Kaltura anyway, which would do the same thing as Camtasia and since they were paying big bucks for Kaltura we should use that, but it turns out that since Kaltura doesn't actually do the same thing (and tends to blow up the computers it's installed on) they're telling us we now have to look at "free" software to do what Camtasia does?

It was bound to happen sometime. My predecessor, who never weeded and who still works with young children, sometimes comes in to get materials and complains that the books she always used in the past aren't around anymore (trust me, they weren't that great). Today, she came in right as I was loading up a couple of carts with picture books to take to tech services to be weeded. OH HAI!

It's kind of weird trying to trouble-shoot between two servers when you have access to neither. (Alma logins go through our campus authentication server.)

i'm just trying to figure out logins. we will have guest users who may borrow books, so will want to log in to see their accounts but don't have our single sign on credentials. looks like we can have an intermediary page to deal with the two types of login but still, seems like a lot of trouble. - weelibrarian - - (Edit | Remove)
1 other comments...
We have a dual login system: one for staff/students authenticating against LDAP, one for visitors etc using Alma authentication. I can talk about the broad architecture of this but not if the talk turns technically detailed. - deborahfitchett - - (Edit | Remove)

How bad does it look to bail ASAP? Must one necessarily hang around for...8 months? A year? If you bail, do you include it on your resume? Let's pretend you have stayed at least 5 years in all other jobs. - Meg VMeg - - (Edit | Remove)

I'm in a new position now, coming up to my 2nd month. Things look good (I am worried about my own competency but that's a separate issue) , so I am in the opposite position of wondering.... I suppose you can almost immediately tell if things are bad and it usually is but you may not immediately notice issues... doesn't imply there won't be down the road. - Aaron Tay - - (Edit | Remove)

Cod Signal: As a sort-of last-minute favor, I'm in charge of the book club discussion in a couple of weeks of the book, City of Scoundrels, by Gary Krist. I'm having trouble finding a reader's guide. I think there's one in the paperback edition, but it doesn't appear on the publisher's website and I only have the hardbound. It's nonfiction, so NoveList doesn't have one. Does anyone know where I can find a reader's guide or discussion questions? Thanks!
