Had to run some serious damage control for our Honors Program today. Its Dean has dropped the ball--apparently for the 3rd year in a row--on coordinating the 3 major groups of people involved in their year-long thesis project (library, writing center, several professors). There is no level of acceptable when one person's total lack of forethought and follow-through directly causes intense confusion and panic for these really hardworking students.

Today was one of those days in which I spent a good chunk of the morning defining words in McDonald's online job application and test for one of their applicants (who was using our computers) because he didn't feel like he could read well enough to use the dictionary I offered him the first time he asked me about a word. I'm really sad that the education system failed this guy.

I helped him as much as I ethically could. I was more than willing to define words for him in the statements, but I had to tell him that I couldn't choose the correct answers for him (it was one of those "which of these statements describes you best" career psych tests). At least he knew how to use the computer. It's really sad when the BMV sends people to us to print things the BMV used to print, and the people (who have never used a computer) learn that they have to have an email address before they set up the account at the BMV's website to get the one page printout that they need. I might have some unresolved anger issues involving the BMV. - Katy_S - - (Edit | Remove)

My first reaction to the latest Bohannon "let's undermine science to improve ethics in science!" thing is to suggest that he's intent on becoming another Beall. My second reaction: Bohannon would take that as a compliment. Arggh.

I just helped a student who graduated last week by going over his paperwork for his new job and being a second pair of eyes, plus helping him decode his W4 form. Another one for the not-in-the-formal-mission-definitely-part-of-my-mission category.

Has there never been talk of a consortial arrangement? - Meg VMeg - - (Edit | Remove)

Well, the problem is basically that we're two separate, independent institutions (otherwise, MPOW would have a shitload more cash). We could declare ourselves a "consortium" but I don't think the vendors would go for it, and they DEFINITELY wouldn't go for ND just saying, "hey, couldja just add in my buddies across the street for a few extra bucks?" - Catherine Pellegrino - - (Edit | Remove)

Me to patron: Please note that items checked out on your card are your responsibility, per our policy. Patron to me: Let me know if you'd like to discuss it over dinner sometime.

Yes, I did leave another comment suggesting that it's a bit hypocritical to insist that There Must Be A Blacklist for OA, when there's no such blacklist for subscription journals--implying, but not stating, that such a blacklist would have to include at least Elsevier and Emerald. - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)
And, going back once more after Joe E. seems to think I'm saying nobody's ever criticized Elsevier or Nature, realized that at a certain point responding to some of the Cooks is very much like feeding the trolls. Better things to do. Like set up my new notebook! Soon... - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)

Looking at the new "featured results bar" in Primo feature where you can surface/callout a bar of results on the 4th result based on scope (ILS/PCI etc) or resource type (book dvd, database, images etc). Similar to Summon which does it for newspaper articles and images but more flexible. Wondering what to use (if at all) for a tab that does "Everything" (catalogue + PCI + IR).
