"For 88 minutes on Wednesday evening, it looked as if the Montreal Impact would spring an improbable upset over Club América at the Estadio Azteca. Instead, they will be playing the ‘what-if’ game on the flight back home, even with an impressive result in their pockets. Ignacio Piatti’s 16th-minute goal looked to be the decider in the two teams’ first leg clash in the CONCACAF Champions League final, setting the stage for a monumental upset, but Mexico international Oribe Peralta nodded in a corner kick in the 89th minute to knot the series at 1-1 heading into the return leg on April 29 at Stade Olympique (8pm ET, FOX Sports 2)." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
I ended up being too busy to watch the match, but caught the highlights later. Very impressive from Montreal! It'll be interesting to see how they're able to carry through on the 29th. They'll be at home, but they're going to be missing their keeper, since Bush is out due to yellow card accumulation. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"This is it. Only two teams remain in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League, and the ultimate fight for continental supremacy begins Wednesday night as the Montreal Impact face Club América at the emblematic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The 2014 Canadian champion Montreal Impact qualified for the final in dramatic fashion on April 7. Costa Rica’s Alajuelense scored four goals in the last 45 minutes of the semifinal second leg, but goals from Jack McInerney and Andres Romero at the Morera Soto made the difference as the Impact won the tie 4-4 on away goals. The following night, América came back from a 3-0 first-leg defeat to Herediano in very convincing fashion. By the 26th minute of the second leg, they were leading the series 4-3, and they ended up winning 6-0 on the night at the Azteca (6-3 on aggregate). Dario Benedetto was the star of the match with four goals and an assist." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Vegetarian Mapo Tofu Recipe - NYT Cooking (http://cooking.nytimes.co... ) [http://graphics8.nytimes.... ]
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Mapo tofu is a justly popular menus item in many Chinese restaurants. It is a quickly cooked dish of braised tofu with minced pork (sometimes beef) in a bracing spicy sauce made with fermented black beans and fermented broad bean paste, along with hot red pepper and Sichuan pepper. This meatless version with fresh shiitake mushrooms is completely satisfying, and surprisingly easy to make. For the best texture, use soft tofu rather than firm, taking care to cook it gently to keep it from crumbling." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
1 other comments...
"PREPARATION Remove stems from mushrooms. Make a light mushroom broth by simmering stems in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, then strain and reserve broth (discard stems). Dice mushroom caps and set aside. Cut tofu into 1-inch cubes. Cover with boiling salted water, let steep for 15 minutes, then drain. Put oil in a wok or wide skillet over medium heat. Add red peppers, black beans and bean paste and cook, stirring until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add garlic and ginger and let sizzle, then add mushrooms, soy sauce, sesame oil and Sichuan pepper. Add 1 1/2 cups mushroom broth and cook mixture gently for 2 minutes. Carefully add tofu cubes. Shake pan to distribute sauce, using a wooden spoon to help. Try to avoid smashing tofu. Drizzle in cornstarch mixture, gently swirling pan to incorporate (sauce will thicken) and simmer tofu in sauce for 2 minutes more. Thin with a little mushroom broth if necessary. Transfer to a low bowl or platter. Sprinkle with scallions and cilantro sprigs." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Rais Mbolhi decision forthcoming from Philadelphia Union | Soccer By Ives (http://www.sbisoccer.com/... ) [http://cdn.sbisoccer.com/... ]

"Has Rais Mbolhi played his last game for the Philadelphia Union? That’s a question that will soon be answered. For the second straight game since Union head coach Jim Curtin announced the Algerian goalkeeper’s benching, Mbolhi was not in uniform for the club in its 1-1 road draw vs. New York City FC on Thursday night. The 28-year-old Mbolhi is in fact not even with the team right now. He was recently reported as being in France, and it remains unclear as to if he will ever return to Philadelphia. The Union plan to have it all sorted soon, though. “We’ll see. It’s kind of week by week,” Curtin told SBI after being asked if Mbolhi was coming back. “He’s taking some time away right now, but we’ll have a decision soon.”" - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams Have Grown Up on "Game of Thrones"™ - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/20... ) [ http://static01.nyt.com/i... ]

Ms. Turner and Ms. Williams, respectively 13 and 12 when “Game of Thrones” started filming, have grown up on the show. Their characters haven’t crossed paths since the Season 1 beheading of their father, Ned Stark; thanks to the series’ sprawling logistics, the actors are often shooting in different countries. (That’s mostly been chilly Northern Ireland for Ms. Williams and the warmer Croatia for Ms. Turner, but they traded places for the new season. “I’d been rubbing it in Maisie’s face for the past four years,” Ms. Turner said.) - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"When the United States plays Mexico on Wednesday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, they will do so on a pitch that is one step above "totally and absolutely awful." And that one step will have been made in the 24 hours leading up to the match. The venue laid down temporary grass at the stadium just days before the match, which is problematic considering that temporary grass is usually terrible anyway. The result is a pitch so bad that there were reports Mexico was considering canceling the match because the playing surface was unsafe." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

This morning's dream was a mad-crazy heist adventure with a lot of FFolks. We needed to do some sort of coordinated break-in at a museum and a bank (for reasons,) but they were both on the same block. There was a lot of driving around, running over rooftops, messing with alarms, and sneaking around guards. The part at the museum seemed to go well, but we weren't as lucky at the bank.

Champions League: Montreal Impact celebrate after historic win, but know there's work to be done | MLSsoccer.com (http://www.mlssoccer.com/... ) (https://youtu.be/8QAM2cxO... )

"History has been made, but the Montreal Impact hope there is more to come. A Canadian club had never qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League Final prior to Tuesday night, but the Impact did just that despite a 4-2 defeat, capitalizing on the away goals tiebreaker when the two-legged series ended 4-4 on aggregate. It was a nervy affair, with Jonathan McDonald scoring the fourth Alajuelense goal in the 93rd minute, bringing back memories of the Impact's 2009 collapse against Santos Laguna in Mexico to the forefront of Impact supporters' minds. But referee Joel Aguilar ended the encounter soon after, leaving the Montreal players to realize what’s coming next: they will take part in their first CCL final, either against another Costa Rican side – Herediano – or Mexican giants Club America." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

" There's now a decidedly Seattle flavor to the National Soccer Hall of Fame after Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid and goalkeeper Kasey Keller were inducted on Tuesday. Schmid and Keller are the first members with deep Sounders ties, although former Tacoma Stars player Preki was inducted in 2010. Glenn "Mooch" Myernick was the third and final member of the 2015 Hall of Fame class. Chris Henderson was also nominated but did not make the cut. Keller, who is currently the color commentator on Sounders broadcasts, enjoyed one of the most decorated playing careers is U.S. history. The goalkeeper won 102 caps, participated in four World Cups (1990, 1998, 2002 and 2006) and spent 17 seasons playing in some of Europe's top leagues before finishing his career with the Sounders where he won MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in his final season (2011). This was the first year Keller was eligible for induction." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"Serves 2 as a main dish, or 4 as an appetizer; 2 tablespoons unsalted butter; 2 tablespoons olive oil; 1 medium yellow onion, diced; 3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced; 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced; One 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes; Sriracha or other hot sauce to taste; 1 bay leaf; 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint; Salt and pepper to taste; 4 large eggs; Crusty bread, for serving" - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
"In a large, deep-sided skillet or frying pan with a tight-fitting lid, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. When the butter melts, add onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add garlic and jalapeño and sauté for 1 more minute. Add crushed tomatoes, hot sauce, and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to keep it at a steady simmer. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and coalesced. Stir in mint. Use a spoon or spatula to make four depressions in the sauce, spacing them evenly throughout the pan. Gently crack an egg into each depression. Season the tops of the eggs with salt and pepper, then cover the pan and cook until the whites are set and the yolks are done to your liking. Serve the eggs straight from the pan, with plenty of crusty bread for mopping up the yolks and sauce." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja hoping to send a message to all MLS managers with Tissue Gate gesture | MLSsoccer.com (http://www.mlssoccer.com/... ) [https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/... ]

Caleb Porter may have been the recipient, but the message FC Dallas manager Oscar Pareja was trying to send was not merely aimed at the Portland Timbers head coach. Instead, it was directed at all MLS managers. Two days after having a now infamous confrontation with Porter that involved a tissue following his team's 3-1 loss to Portland, Pareja told FOX soccer analyst Alexi Lalas on Monday that he was hoping to make a statement to all coaches across the league about their constant badgering of officials. The FC Dallas manager also pointed the finger at himself, stating that he also needed to better learn how to deal with his emotions when calls don't go his way. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"Was that a piece of paper? What kind of paper was it? Those were probably some of the questions you were asking yourself after the final whistle of Saturday night's Portland Timbers vs. FC Dallas match at Providence Park, a 3-1 win for the home side -- the first victory for the Timbers and the first loss of the season for FC Dallas. The customary postgame pleasantries between the two coaches – in this case Portland's Caleb Porter and FC Dallas manager Oscar Pareja – were anything but typical. The video above shows Pareja's outstretched arm handing something to Porter, who snatches it and tosses it in the air. Turns out it was a tissue. "I walked over to shake his hand and he had a tissue that he put over his nose and tried to hand me a tissue," Timbers head coach Caleb Porter said in the postgame press conference. "So I thought it was very poor sportsmanship out of him [Pareja]. I never said one word to him the whole game and he obviously wasn't happy with the loss. "But I've never had a coach come up and disrespect me like that. So that's what happened." No word yet on Pareja's version of the events." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Jordan Morris clearly has some fans among the United States national team decision makers. Jurgen Klinsmann made the Sounders Academy product the first collegian to receive a senior national team cap since Ante Razov in 1995, the year before MLS started. Morris recently picked up his second cap, as well. Berti Vogts, who was recently named the USMNT technical advisor, is also impressed. He's not as impressed with Morris' decision to stay school, though. "He's a good player," Vogts told ESPN. "Wow. I cannot understand why he's playing in college." It's certainly not for lack of interest. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

soccer (n.) 1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang (with jocular formation -er (3)), from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); compare rugger. An unusual method of formation, but those who did it perhaps shied away from making a name out of the first three letters of Assoc. http://www.etymonline.com... I think it's part of why I don't mind using them interchangeably. It's very old, and avoids confusion in the US (and a few other places.) I usually refer to it as "football" if I'm talking about leagues elsewhere, since the context means there's less likely to be any confusion. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
