"Major League Soccer announced Thursday that San Jose, California, will host the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Game. The 21st annual mid-summer showcase will feature several days of festivities culminating in a match between the league’s top players and a prestigious international club at Avaya Stadium, the new, state-of-the-art home of the San Jose Earthquakes. Pot-Roasted Artichokes With White Wine and Capers Recipe - NYT Cooking http://graphics8.nytimes.... (http://cooking.nytimes.co... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"INGREDIENTS: ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil; 3 ½ pounds baby artichokes (about 18); 2 medium garlic cloves, thinly sliced; 1 ½ teaspoons Maldon or other flaky sea salt; 1 ½ cups dry white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc; 1 heaping tablespoon drained capers; A five-finger pinch of mint leaves (preferably black mint), torn at the last minute (see note)" - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
"PREPARATION Heat the oil in a heavy pot (wide enough to hold the artichokes with room to spare) over medium-high heat until it just begins to smoke. Stand the artichokes cut sides down in the oil, wait a minute, then reduce the heat to medium-low, sprinkle in the garlic and salt, and cook, without stirring, just until the garlic turns golden and smells toasty, about 3 minutes. Pour in the wine, cover the pot and cook, without stirring, at a vigorous simmer until you can insert a sharp knife into the thick artichoke bottoms with barely any resistance, about 25 minutes. Five minutes or so before they’re fully tender, scatter on the capers and cover again. Uncover, raise the heat to medium-high, and bring the liquid to a boil. Cook until all the wine has evaporated (the bubbling sound will become a sizzle), about 3 minutes. Add the mint and keep cooking the artichokes in the oil (it’s OK if a few of them tip over), until the cut sides of the artichokes are deep golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Lower the heat if necessary to prevent the artichokes from getting too dark. Arrange the artichokes prettily on a plate, and scoop the capers, oil and slightly crispy mint over top. Serve straightaway or at room temperature. A five-finger pinch is as much as you can grab with just the tips of all five fingers." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

I know fan groups can be ALL TEH DRAMAZ sometimes, but I'm just over the Emerald City Supporters this year. I kinda don't care what sort of MLS and front-office driven shenanigans lead to an ECS guy flipping off a camera on live TV at Vancouver, or why they were all aggro about people photographing the march to the match on Sunday. They just look like a bunch of assholes.
9 years ago - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
Yes, the MLS keeping overreaching. They were expressly told that, no, they did not have permission to take away seats in the travelling supporters section to film for a promotional Cascadia Rivalry video, but they did it anyway - and then aired some of that footage live. (Hence, middle finger guy, who is now banned from CLink.) The thing is, the best way to deal with that? Turn your back on the camera. It gives them no footage. It's a pain, but they can't make you cheer. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

True, it just feels like the leadership is at the forefront of the petulant behavior. They were the ones encouraging people to flip off anyone taking pictures of the march this weekend, and then were oh so shocked that people took it further than that. They seem to be advocating some sort of "flip off the world" er, strategy(?) to deal with things they don't like. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Randomize U.S. Open Cup draw and 'dare to make it meaningful', Sigi Schmid urges - Sounder At Heart https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"There is no shortage of ideas on how to "fix" the U.S. Open Cup, and around this time every year Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid shares his. It's genius in its simplicity: Stop regionalizing it and institute a blind draw, effectively mimicking the far more popular FA Cup. Even if Schmid weren't the tournament's most successful coach -- he has won it five times and coached seven finalists -- his thinking is worth hearing out: "The only thing that's sad for me is one of the great things about the FA Cup and some of the cups even in other countries is you can end up with a derby as the final game. You can have a Manchester City play Manchester United as a final game, you can have an Arsenal play against Tottenham as a final game. Because of the regionalization of the draw in U.S. Soccer, you will never have a Portland-Seattle final. You will never have a New York City-Red Bull final. You will never have a Dallas-Houston final. And I think that's a little sad. It's disappointing."" - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"The Los Angeles Football Club may not know exactly what the team will be called when they begin play in Major League Soccer in 2018, but they know where they'll be playing. On Monday, LAFC's ownership group announced its intent to build a new 22,000-seat stadium in South Los Angeles, at the site of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, located next to the LA Memorial Coliseum. “We are committed to making our home in South Los Angeles and to be part of the phenomenal development happening along the Figueroa corridor that extends to downtown Los Angeles,” said Henry Nguyen, head of LAFC's ownership group, in a club statement. The 24-member group also includes sports and entertainment mogul Peter Guber, businessmen Ruben Gnanalingam and Vincent Tan, Club President Tom Penn, U.S. soccer superstar Mia Hamm Garciaparra, NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, MLB All-Star Nomar Garciaparra, and best-selling author and entrepreneur Tony Robbins." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Galaxy effectively blocked Sounders from signing Timo Hildebrand - Sounder At Heart https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The Sounders had their sights set on goalkeeper Timo Hildenbrand, who had trained with the Sounders and was offered a contract. According to multiple sources, the Galaxy put in a discovery claim for Hildebrand after the goalkeeper had practiced with Seattle, getting wind of the training stint and moving to get in the way of Seattle's signing. Hildenbrand asked Seattle not to put in a discovery claim on him before the two sides agreed to a contract, which gave the Galaxy enough time to step in and submit their claim. When asked about the Hildenbrand case, Arena denied that the Galaxy put in the claim to squeeze a fee out of Seattle. According to one Sounders source, the Galaxy never set a price for getting out of Seattle's way, but by staying in the way they forced Seattle to give up its move for Hildenbrand. "Hildenbrand was on our discovery list and they brought him on trial and offered him a contract," Arena said. "We said he's on our discovery list. Technically you can't do that." All of this comes at the same time that Arena is complaining about how the current Discovery process works, one in which the Galaxy were forced to send the New England Revolution a relatively paltry sum of $50,000 in allocation money and had to wait a couple months before signing United States youth international Sebastian Lletget. If the current system were in place last year, the Galaxy would have either had to sign Hildebrand or accept the $50,000 in allocation." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Makes me wonder how often that's happened when trialists have come in for various teams. I can see why Arena is mad about the current system - it seems like he'd prefer the silent veto, as it were. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

How to Cook with Mushroom Stems (http://food52.com/blog/12... ) https://farm9.staticflick...
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Lastnightsdinner's Velvety Mushroom Soup (http://food52.com/recipes... ) is a great way to use up your mushroom stems, and its taste lives up to its name: It truly is velvety—without the use of any cream—and it's also intensely mushroomy, thanks to the trifecta of mushroom stock, dried mushrooms, and fresh mushrooms. The base doesn't start with a mirepoix, but you won't be missing out on any flavor: The mushrooms are deglazed with sweet vermouth, fresh thyme is used in both the stock and the soup, and a Parmesan rind (along with all of the mushrooms, of course) provides umami. Note that the recipe calls for more shiitake stems than caps. Plan to cook this soup after you make another recipe calling for shiitake mushroom caps, or simply use any extra shiitake caps in place of some of the cremini or white button mushrooms. " - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Now we know why Chivas USA never had a USL PRO affiliate - The Goat Parade (http://www.thegoatparade.... ) https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/...

"In an interesting interview with Orange County Blues play-by-play announcer Marc Serber on the USLRadio podcast that was released on Thursday, came the fascinating tidbit from Serber that Chivas USA wanted an affiliate agreement with the Blues, which the latter club rebuffed (that point comes at right around the 12:00 mark). Serber doesn't specify which year this was (or if it was both years), or any further details about it, but that's pretty striking, considering both teams had some real turmoil the last couple years and still CUSA was evidently denied in the seemingly-logical quest to make the Blues their USL PRO affiliate. Of course, in the long run, it's a moot point, since Chivas USA no longer exist and no one can deny there was remarkable turmoil and disfunction with the defunct MLS side. And the Blues are in the midst of a rebuild that seems to be paying dividends so far this year, while remaining a totally independent USL team." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
I have to wonder if Chivas was even /more/ of a mess behind the scenes than previously speculated. The Blues probably could've used a bit of extra help the last couple of years, but not if that 'help' was likely to cause them more grief. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"According to several sources, MLS has voided his contract, presumably because he had a preexisting condition. It remains unclear who knew the severity of Johnson’s ailment and when they knew it. What is clear, sources say, is that United was not aware when the club acquired him from Seattle before the 2014 season. Sources also say the Sounders did not know of the potential medical danger when they signed him as a free agent in early 2012. Even in the best of health, Johnson was a risky proposition because of his checkered career. A known heart problem would have ended any discussion about acquiring him." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
The whole "pre-existing condition" thing can be so thorny. It is so damn hard to detect the sort of problem he has (so much so that it kills a number of athletes every year.) It's unlikely that he'd have continued playing if he'd known, or anyone had known. I hope that it doesn't mean anything negative about receiving health benefits from the league, in the same way that I'd hope that for any player. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"Nearly two months after the season started, Major League Soccer finally got around to releasing their new roster rules. There quite a few changes, some of which were strongly rumored and a lot of which are quite confusing (despite the stated goal to make the whole situation less so). Some quick highlights: The salary budget is $3.49 million with only the top 20 players on the roster counting against it The rosters include 28 spots, with the top 24 earning no less than $60,000 and the final four spots earning at least $50,000 Teams are still limited to three Designated Players, who will now count $436,250 unless a team uses allocation money to buy them down. Having three Designated Players at a full cap hit would take up about 37.5 percent of your budget, which is consistent with previous years." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"IT’S HARD TO overstate just how amazing bats are. After all, they’re the only mammals with the true power of flight (the flying squirrel can glide its heart out, but that doesn’t really count). Bats can perform incredible banks and turns and dives a bird would envy: An eagle may be able to swoop in and snag a fish from a river, but a bat can pinpoint a tiny insect and run it down mid-air. Bats have the power of echolocation to guide their fighter pilot-status flight, yes, but a team of scientists just uncovered an extra way the proto-vampires boost their hunts: They use microscopic hairs on their wings to feel their way through the air. The hairs act like levers of sorts, tripping nerves that send signals to the brain, allowing the bat to precisely correct its flight to avoid obstacles and pick off insects—no small feat in the pitch blackness." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"For 88 minutes on Wednesday evening, it looked as if the Montreal Impact would spring an improbable upset over Club América at the Estadio Azteca. Ignacio Piatti’s 16th-minute goal looked to be the decider in the two teams’ first leg clash in the CONCACAF Champions League final, setting the stage for a monumental upset, but Mexico international Oribe Peralta nodded in a corner kick in the 89th minute to knot the series at 1-1 heading into the return leg on April 29 at Stade Olympique (8pm ET, FOX Sports 2)." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
