My first reaction to the latest Bohannon "let's undermine science to improve ethics in science!" thing is to suggest that he's intent on becoming another Beall. My second reaction: Bohannon would take that as a compliment. Arggh.

Apropos very little except being related to a bunch of almond growers and sick of the repeated "OMG! It takes a gallon of water to grow an almond! California has to stop growing almonds!" (esp. Mother Jones): The current World Wildlife Fund magazine notes that it takes NINE gallons of water to produce one teaspoon of sugarcane-based sugar. (I know, I know, the drought's local. For now.)

My favorite was when they interviewed a CATTLE RANCHER about how much water almond growers were using up. Right. 'Cause cows don't take any water at all. Gah. - laura x - - (Edit | Remove)
Yeah, it's pretty much BS to be worried about who much water food production takes when the bottled water industry is using so much water. - Kirsten - - (Edit | Remove)

How likely is it that an OA article involved a fee? I've posted a subject-by-subject list for 2014: http://walt.lishost.org/2...

Uncharitable thought on catching up with the latest comments in the marathon Skitch "predatory" thread: "You don't like the Spanish Inquisition? Build a better inquisition!"

Yes, I did leave another comment suggesting that it's a bit hypocritical to insist that There Must Be A Blacklist for OA, when there's no such blacklist for subscription journals--implying, but not stating, that such a blacklist would have to include at least Elsevier and Emerald. - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)
And, going back once more after Joe E. seems to think I'm saying nobody's ever criticized Elsevier or Nature, realized that at a certain point responding to some of the Cooks is very much like feeding the trolls. Better things to do. Like set up my new notebook! Soon... - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)

Reading that Verizon's buying AOL (why?) reminded me that we saw a movie last weekend from AOL Time Warner--and I wondered at the time: How much more value would have been retained if AOL, Time-Life and Warner Bros. had stayed three companies--which is what they are now--instead of devaluing themselves into a conglomerate?

<snark>I see S.Abram has just labeled Denning's bizarre Forbes future-of-libraries column cum CIL keynote "fantastic." And he's right, for certain traditional meanings of fantastic.</snark>

Rick Anderson makes a point I agree with (hey, it can happen!) in Skitch today...and wow, is the comment stream revealing about some of the other "chefs," and not in a good way. http://scholarlykitchen.s...

The comment stream continues apace, now with multiple assurances that we *need* a blacklist and a whitelist for OA journals. I've commented to ask: can you point me to the blacklist and whitelist for subscription journals? (OK, I know I should stay away, but it's SO tempting.) - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)

Wonderful, just wonderful: now there's a "study" saying that Flanders scholars published in "predatory" journals X number of times, because Beall--that is, HIS UNSUPPORTED WORD is enough to form the basis of a study. (Edited: the study wasn't really scholarly, but the basis for it's pretty damn objectionable--oh, and they threw in a Hindawi appendix, because The Great Beall's still suspicious of them.) Yesterday I was itching to say something snarky about the CiL keynote I'm so glad I didn't hear, based on the Forbes blog entry by the speaker--where I pretty much stopped after a paragraph listing all these things (books, newspapers, watches, magazines, etc., etc.) that are "obsolete" because of smartphones. Turns out The Annoyed One did a good brief take on this guy: http://lj.libraryjournal....

Not going to name names, and it's on another former-ff hangout, but *damn*: 20 years ago, some of today's Hot Library White Male Keynoters were overexposed (IMNSHO). Twenty years ago. Too bad there are no thoughtful, interesting, informed, maybe-less-than-nearing-retirement-age women or non-whites in the library profession: where did they all go? (Since there were plenty of them back in the day..,admittedly underfeatured on same-old, same-old, safe-keynote rosters.)

Heck, even two years ago--the last time I spoke at a conference--there were women who were better speakers, better informed, more interesting than most of the Men On The Podium. Was there some plague I'm unaware of? - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)

I do too. But in this case, it's not only sexual and racial diversity (needed as those are), it's *giving today's librarians a shot at the podium.* - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)

A Word (or LibreOffice) formatting expertise question: you're printing a bunch of shelf labels, which are always one line long but vary in type size (depending on the length of the label), and the labels need to be 3/4" apart vertically. What's the easiest way to assure this spacing (when you're not planning to make a career out of it)? I figured out one very easy way, but it took me a few minutes to think of it. Can others do better? (I'll look again tomorrow morning and offer my own answer.)

table? - Christina Pikas - - (Edit | Remove)
OK, here's what I did--and I think it's easier/fewer steps than a table (or defining a new style): selected the whole list (ctrl-A or select all), right-clicked, chose Paragraph, made sure above & below spacing was zero, then set line spacing to exactly 54 points. Worked like a champ--and that process took about 10 seconds, much faster to do than to describe. - waltcrawford - - (Edit | Remove)

Just finished writing draft of primary essay for June Cites & Insights--mostly "anti-OA" pieces, ending with a few "pro-OA." Geez, that was depressing. Including my sense that independent researchers (on OA or anywhere else) are invisible and should disappear. But stubbornness seems to run in my family.

I'll just hide this casual comment here: Reading Twitter stream, encountered a new Outsell report on OA. $100 a page--for each reader, that is. Clearly, I've been in the wrong game. (But, of course, Outsell has Sekrit Sources thus providing Authoritative Info.)

They had a report on OA last year (or 2?) that was about $1,295 or some such. One could find the pdf of it that someone posed for free on the Internet. - Joe - - (Edit | Remove)

While I'm hopeful frenf.it may prove suitable...at this point, I'm guessing a bunch of stuff is going to wind up as blog posts (or, sigh, FB status updates) that would otherwise be casual FF comments/queries. Just did one (Excel, to my surprise, using a non-zero Y axis for an auto-created graph).
