When Charles Stuart was executed didn't parliament and all the new republicans have the right to strip him of all his titles? How was he addressed on the day of his execution? Were they trying to send a message, ie we can and will execute a king if he's guilty of tyranny? Or am I over thinking it all? #ThinkingAloud

No, I don't think group shaming the dog owners will work very well. A dog DNA register, a simple turd probe, and little flags with the owner's face and home address to plant in the offending turd. That should do it :) - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

suffrage (http://www.etymonline.com... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
suffrage (n.) late 14c., "intercessory prayers or pleas on behalf of another," from Old French sofrage "plea, intercession" (13c.) and directly from Medieval Latin suffragium, from Latin suffragium "support, ballot, vote; right of voting; a voting tablet," from suffragari "lend support, vote for someone," conjectured to be a compound of sub "under" (see sub-) + fragor "crash, din, shouts (as of approval)," related to frangere "to break" (see fraction). On another theory (Watkins, etc.) the second element is frangere itself and the notion is "use a broken piece of tile as a ballot" (compare ostracism). - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)
Meaning "a vote for or against anything" is from 1530s. The meaning "political right to vote" in English is first found in the U.S. Constitution, 1787. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

Top 10: Most Beautiful Birds of Costa Rica | Wild Travel Central America (http://www.wildtravelcent... ) http://www.wildtravelcent... http://www.wildtravelcent... http://www.wildtravelcent...

Home of more than 900 species of birds, Costa Rica is a chapel for birdwatchers; from the Pacific to the Caribbean, from South to North and, from the shore of the oceans to the tip of the mountains, birds are virtually on display in their diverse habitats. From small hummingbirds, that remind little gems to cryptic colored herons, stunning species as the Resplendent Quetzal and the hawk eagles, toucans, tanagers and more, it is strongly hard to say what are the most beautiful birds of Costa Rica, since each has a talent for its song, colors, bill, behavior, flight, relations with other species, and many more. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

Phylogenetic structure and host abundance drive disease pressure in communities : Nature : Nature Publishing Group (http://www.nature.com/nat... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
Pathogens play an important part in shaping the structure and dynamics of natural communities, because species are not affected by them equally1, 2. A shared goal of ecology and epidemiology is to predict when a species is most vulnerable to disease. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)
1 other comments...
Here we show that the phylogenetic and ecological structure of the surrounding community can be important predictors of disease pressure. We found that the amount of tissue lost to disease increased with the relative abundance of a species across a grassland plant community, and that this rare-species advantage had an additional phylogenetic component: disease pressure was stronger on species with many close relatives. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

What do you get when you combine a professor who literally wrote the book on community ecology and another who has more than 40 years experience as a leader in the field of evolutionary biology? You get a new way to look at how organisms of all sorts interact and evolve to form ecological communities. Two Michigan State University professors published their results in the current issue of Trends in Ecology and Evolution, and together they have come up with a new way to think about how evolution and ecology interact in community assembly. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

Black flamingo, possibly unique, spotted in Cyprus | euronews, world news (http://www.euronews.com/2... in-cyprus/) http://static.euronews.co... #nature #birds #wildlife
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
An extremely rare black flamingo has been spotted on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, exciting nature lovers who said it may be the only bird of its type ever seen. The flamingo, seen on the banks of a salt lake on Wednesday morning, is thought to have a genetic condition known as melanism, which causes it to generate more of the pigment melanin, turning it dark, rather than the usual pink colour. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)
Update: Experts think it may be the same black flamingo that birdwatchers spotted in Israel in 2014. It’s believed the bird could have melanism, which is a rare condition that affects skin pigments and can turn the features of birds black. The condition is the opposite of what causes an albino. http://www.earthweek.com/... - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

Citrus evolution history revealed with genomes - Science News - redOrbit (http://www.redorbit.com/n... ) http://www.redorbit.com/m...

From oranges, lemons, and limes, to kumquats and multi-colored grapefruits, the whole world loves us a good citrus fruit. Citrus are among the most important cultivated fruit trees worldwide. The high commercial value of citrus as a crop means that it has been the subject of a lot of research, but the evolutionary history and the origins of citrus as “domesticated” cultivated citrus species were poorly understood. Now, advances in genome technology have allowed scientists to build an accurate picture of the evolution and variability of the genus. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

Scientists reveal how a sea sponge gets its remarkable strength - physicsworld.com (http://physicsworld.com/c... ) http://images.iop.org/obj...

The clever design underlying the remarkable strength of a sea sponge's anchoring fibres has been unravelled by scientists in the US. The team found that the strength of a fibre comes from the particular way that it is made from about 25 concentric silica cylinders. The researchers believe that this natural design could be copied to make strong artificial materials for use in larger structures such as buildings and aeroplanes. - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)
