Aha! I misread the map in the quick reading I did. I saw that it was called library or something (too lazy too click on the link now), but I saw the mile thing and.... *major* reading comprehension fail on my part. *facepalm* And now I want a Dunkin' Donuts at my library. Because across the street (where the closest one is) is still too far away. Or too close. Or both at the same time? Schrodinger's Donut. - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

On the subject of reheating pasta: "Late to the party – but I worked in a restaurant back in the day. Instead of cooking spaghetti from scratch each time there was an order, they cooked a gigantic pot’s worth in the morning (al dente). Then, they put it (plain, no sauce) in covered containers filled with cold water and stored it in the refrigerator until needed. After that, it was a simple matter to just heat it up as needed in the pan with the sauce, and much faster.

Mr. Murphy offered would-be novelists a free primer on his website. Dammit, Fitbit! I had the new tiles all arranged the way I wanted them, and now you've removed the ones I had at the top, the ones I *really* wanted, the single-tile ones. Now, because of the long/wide combined tiles, it's impossible to arrange what I want where I want it so that I can see it all within one screen.

The number-one tile I use the most, the one with Miles? Gone. (Also, if I had known that their "we're adding new tiles" also meant "we're removing others," I wouldn't have bothered rearranging them when they first announced it. It's the bait and switch that bugs me. (I'm no longer surprised when companies remove useful features.) - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

At my old job, when I did reference in Spanish a lot, I used to change the language choice on Google all the time, so I could print directions, etc. It was very easy to do: advanced, language, click on language, done. Today, I needed to print directions in Polish, but... you have to log in to do basic stuff like that now? Really? Or am I missing something?
9 years ago - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
(Also, it used to be that, even after you went to another language, there was always a "click here to change to English" link, so you could find your way back. Not anymore. I guess that was too convenient. Today, I had to guess which of the many links in Polish was the way back.) - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)
I did log in, 'cause I had to, using our reference account. Something I didn't think of until later: if any of the librarians at the other reference desks used Google in that half hour, they would've encountered Polish Google. Oops. - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

“The biggest game changer was that he began cooking his own meals. He put himself on a restrictive diet, cutting out all meat, fish and dairy, and adding nutritious fruits and vegetables like avocados, potatoes and blueberries to create a well balanced diet. […] It takes careful planning and a little bit of time on his day off. When he's not on the road, he preps his meals for the coming week. […] Anderson's meals aren't boring even with such a restricted diet and lack of kitchen space. Instead, Anderson uses the truck's electrical power to his advantage and carries along a pressure cooker, waffle maker, hot plate, toaster and Nutribullet. He makes dishes like vegetable stir-fry with peanut sauce, which has rice, cauliflower, broccoli, curry powder, dried parsley and pepper. His meals are also quick to make since time of the essence for him. For example, the stir-fry takes 12 minutes. […] Beyond the weight loss, Anderson's seen a transformation in his overall health. "I don't take no antidepressants, anymore. No blood, no medicine at all and it's all doctor approved," explained Anderson, who is also now exercising again.” - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

BBC forgotten list 'sets precedent' http://www.bbc.com/news/t... List of BBC web pages which have been removed from Google's search results http://www.bbc.co.uk/blog...

“The links were removed as part of the "right to be forgotten" ruling put in place by the European court. It allows individuals to request certain links do not show up when a person searches their name. The BBC published a full list of [BBC] stories that had been removed so far. It would continue to do so, said David Jordan, head of editorial policy. "It's impossible to have a meaningful debate if you've not got an idea about what's being de-listed," he said. […] "It doesn't make [the stories] more findable for anybody looking for a name," he said. "What it does is give a sense of and a flavour of what kind of material is being delisted. That's important." […] The European Union Court of Justice ruled last year that search engine links to "irrelevant" and outdated data about a person should be erased on request. It only affects searches made by users in the European Union.” [From second link: “One caveat: when looking through this list it is worth noting that we are not told who has requested the delisting, and we should not leap to conclusions as to who is responsible. The request may not have come from the obvious subject of a story.”] - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)
