Study: Northern Rockies wolf hunting ‘not sustainable’ | Summit County Citizens Voice (http://summitcountyvoice.... https://summitvoice.files... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The international research team said those politically driven policies do not always align with basic scientific data, which can undermine conservation efforts. For example, theresearchers concluded that the current harvest levels for the recently de-listed population of gray wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains of the United States have led to decreased survival and reproduction, smaller packs, social disruption and a reversal from population growth to decline. The research team includes scientists with decades of experience studying wolves, lions, African wild dogs, tigers, dingoes and sharks. They reported their findings in the Dec. 18 issue of the journal Science. “While regulated carnivore hunting can potentially minimize human-wildlife conflict and provide revenue for conservation, it can also drive population declines of threatened species,” said marine predator expert Neil Hammerschlag, of the UM Rosenstiel School and UM Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy. “Well-regulated hunting of predators needs to be guided by strong science and consider both the costs and benefits for conservation.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Spaceballs: The Search For More Money Is Apparently Happening! (http://io9.gizmodo.com/sp... http://i.kinja-img.com/ga... )

"Brooks has said in the past that he’d like to direct Spaceballs: The Search For More Money, and as Blastr points out, “vintage properties are all the rage” at the moment. Given the enormous commercial appeal of Star Wars, this would be the perfect film to skewer the rebooted franchise. The real question comes with the cast: John Candy and Joan Rivers have both passed away, and Rick Moranis has since retired from acting (and if he didn’t come back for Ghostbusters, he probably wouldn’t come back for this). Fortunately, The Force Awakens gives Brooks an out: he can bring in a whole new group of cast members. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"I enjoy taking photographs of the Friesian year round in all weather. Winter, however, is my favorite time of year largely due to the high contrast which makes for a more dramatic image. It can be a bit of a nightmare at times as any photographer knows from an exposure perspective; white snow/black horse." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Duets That Reflect the World Offstage - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"Yet ballet remains the sole art that is predicated on a dichotomy between female and male. She rises on point; he does not (except as a clowning or animal effect). He must partner her; she is not expected to return the compliment. This doesn’t correspond to a society in which wives and mothers also hold the same jobs as men; it doesn’t reflect the strength shown by many women in supporting their men, financially and/or emotionally. And none of it matches a Western society in which civil unions and marriages between people of the same sex have become a prime topic (let alone a ballet culture where the quotient of gay men is high). Actually, ballet has always contained scope for variety. There were female-female duets when the genre was young in the 17th century. A woman supporting another woman is seen in Balanchine’s “Symphonie Concertante” (1947), a man another man in his “Orpheus” (1948). Still, these moments have been exceptions to the rule." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Another visual change is now widespread in modern ballet: the omission of tights. Mr. Peck’s “Rodeo” is one instance among many. Its lone woman has legs bare from point shoes to leotard, and the five men of that quintet have similarly exposed thighs and knees. I don’t mean to underrate the surface beauty of finely trained dancers’ flesh; but the effect, as I’ve argued before, radically changes ballet aesthetics. Show us bare muscles, bare knees, and we’ll stop noticing the transcendent line and geometry of ballet in favor of flesh, sinews, joints. Ballet for centuries has given us the ideal form in ways correspondent to the nude in art; many new ballets instead show us nakedness and exposure. It’s quite possible that, as ballet goes on changing in the 21st century, it will grow less splendid than the art many of us fell in love with in the 20th. That art reached extraordinary peaks in the perfect and ceremonious hierarchies of “The Sleeping Beauty” (1890) and “Symphony in C” (1947); it’s hard to imagine any choreographer wanting to create comparable realms today. What matters, however, is that the art is not fixed in amber. We can go to see new ballets and recognize in their stage societies aspects of the world we know." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Stanford launches digital humanities minor, combining tech skills with critical thinking (http://news.stanford.edu/... http://news.stanford.edu/... )

"In addition to taking courses in which they use digital tools, growing numbers of students are also working closely with faculty members on digital humanities projects outside of the classroom, where they apply computational criticism to the study of literature, combine historical and digital analysis to investigate Chinese grave relocations, and develop social annotation tools to be used in teaching online courses, to mention a few. Many of these projects are conducted in labs at the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis (CESTA) and in the Stanford libraries. But until now, there has been no formalized way of acknowledging digital humanities as part of the undergraduate curriculum. Administered by the English department, the Digital Humanities minor program officially launched in September to fill that need." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Rare Siberian crane spotted in Taipei not new to Taiwan - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"A rare Siberian crane that was spotted and captured near a Taipei MRT station early yesterday has turned out to be the same one that has been living at a wetland in New Taipei City for the past year. The bird was taken to the city’s Animal Protection Office after it apparently lost its way and landed near the Songshan MRT Station, media reports said. At first the bird, also known as the Siberian white crane or snow crane, was thought to be the second to have landed in the nation in recent years. However, the office said that, on closer inspection, it discovered that the white crane was the same one found last year in a wetland in New Taipei City’s Jinshan District (金山), where it has temporarily resided for more than a year." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"The Siberian crane is an endangered species, with only a few thousand left in the world. The bird is to be sent back to its home in New Taipei City, where it has been looked after by a local farmer with help from bird lovers and animal rights groups." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"You are a woman of modest means, yet you only seem to date men who own hotels. You are a nice girl who knows exactly one nice guy. You forget about him a lot, but gosh, he sure is nice. Whoever he is. You spend roughly 35% of your day sitting in fashionable cafés having very intense conversations. You own like three Samsung Galaxy S6s and so do all your friends." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The poor woman is also very spunky and independent until the rich jerk man decides he loves her, then she's helpless and loses all common sense. And even though she spends a lot of time in cafes getting yelled at, offered money to go away and water-slapped (sometimes at the same time), no one ever touches their $6 drinks. Her mom also beats her, her dad is either dead or a deadbeat and she has a shiftless brother. Her best friend is almost always a bitch and unsupportive of anything she does with her love life. - faboomama - - (Edit | Remove)

A Theater in China That Brings Art, and Dwarfs, Out of the Shadows - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The theater, near the south entrance to the Old Summer Palace, was founded by Lin Zhonghua, 43, a former editor of People’s Daily. Distressed that this traditional art he loved was fast declining, as people moved to cities and found alternative entertainments, he quit his newspaper job in 2006 and established the playhouse. But he had difficulty recruiting young people interested in learning shadow puppetry. He turned to an acquaintance, Wu Xiaoli, and asked if she knew of any possible recruits. Ms. Wu, who is herself a dwarf, saw an opportunity for a group of like-statured people who face considerable job discrimination in China. Soon, four people were hired and the core of the theater group was in place. Now, the playhouse employs 96 dwarfs, from all over China, and gives two performances every day but Tuesday. And Mr. Lin has the satisfaction of realizing his dream of a thriving shadow puppet theater, while providing employment for his highly dedicated performers. “They’ve saved each other,” he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"As commercially successful as Dragon in the Sky’s performances have been, some purists have objected to some of the theater’s departures from tradition. The plays have tended to feature stories aimed at children, rather than some of the art’s more complicated themes. Partly this is to accommodate the performers’ voices, which are naturally high-pitched, and partly it reflects Mr. Lin’s campaign to attract younger viewers. Mr. Lin acknowledged that the performers’ stature had become a selling point in promoting the theater. But he insisted, “Its social value greatly outweighs its business value.” “There was one young man who came to us and asked just one question, ‘Is there any food? If so, I’ll stay,’ ” Mr. Lin said. The theater has addressed that problem of basic livelihood for people who too often have trouble finding work." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The NPA’s Second Special Police Corps sacked Yeh on Wednesday, after its disciplinary committee tallied Yeh’s performance as having numerous reprimands, which he incurred by refusing to cut his long hair. Yeh said that although he is biologically male, he does not identify with either gender and firing him for not meeting the male-specific grooming standard is discriminatory." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"The new deal means changes. Disney is rethinking how it wants to present its longtime characters: “The focus will be on empowered heroines,” said Disney Consumer Products EVP of global licensing Josh Silverman. Hasbro and Disney also say they want the brand looking more diverse: Both Hasbro and Disney say they plan to highlight the princesses’ bravery and skills in future advertising, and to give the nonwhite princesses more shelf space. “A 4-year-old girl doesn’t realize how the world she lives in is different from 10 or 15 years ago, but her parents do,” says Frascotti. And parents, he points out, are the ones who buy the toys." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"And Hasbro’s plans are very, very ambitious: Hasbro and Disney are redesigning and rereleasing every Princess doll, even Pocahontas, which few stores carry. Hasbro hired a few dozen people, mostly designers and developers, who work out of its newly expanded production studio in Burbank, just minutes from Disney. “We’re going to make the Princess brand far bigger and more ubiquitous than it has been in the past,” says Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief executive officer." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Can 1 million women be wrong about happiness and health? - LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/op... http://www.trbimg.com/img... )

"We believe what the authors of the Lancet study found was not whether happiness is related to longevity but this: Whether a one-item happiness question will predict a shortened life in healthy middle-aged women, if you delete how happiness has affected their health for their first six decades and if you erase the influence of key pathways to health such as social support, smoking and body mass index. Before we judge the true meaning of this research, we plan on waiting to see the effect of happiness once the study is complete, and we have data on many more of the million women (not just 4% of them). We are happy researchers, and so we plan to be around when that happens." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Inspired by the beloved and iconic main set, the décor features the same counters, bricks, neon signage, and of course, the big orange couches as part of this recreation project. As an avid Friends fan, the owner of the cafe quit her job to embark on this interesting project. She and her friends spent two months to realize everything from the show, collecting furniture and fittings from China, France and the United States." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Vintage Photos of People Mesmerized by Holiday Windows | Atlas Obscura (http://www.atlasobscura.c... http://assets.atlasobscur... )

"Each year department stores unveil their holiday window displays to admiring crowds. Festive windows have been a tradition in New York City since the 1870s; R.H. Macy, of the retailer Macy's, is largely credited with having created one of the first Christmas window displays in 1874. Today, an estimated 15,000 people pass by the store's elaborate windows every hour during the season. In recent years, gazing into store windows has become almost as much a tradition as the actual buying of gifts, which of course, is the ultimate goal of the windows–to get shoppers in the door. Design and production for displays often begins more than a year in advance, despite estimates that 46 percent of Christmas shopping will be done online in 2015. Today we look back to a time before online shopping, when browsing was done through a pane of glass. Delight in these vintage photos of people mesmerized by store windows stocked with Christmas goodies. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Wild animals can be our spirit guides as we navigate the peaks and valleys of life. These plodding members of the order Testudines know that the things you want may not fall into your lap this second, this year, this decade, or even this half-century.
