Doctor warns against going crab crazy - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"As crab season has arrived in Taiwan, Lai Hui-lien (賴卉蓮), a physician at the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Keelung Hospital, is urging members of the public to show restraint. Crab meat is very rich in protein, which means it is not healthy to eat too much of it, Lai said, especially people who suffer from hypertension or cardiovascular diseases. People with gout or skin allergies should avoid crab completely, she said. Deemed to be “cold” in terms of Chinese medicine, crabs should not be eaten alongside with beer and pears, Lai said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Dominic also agreed that seafood is 'cold' and women are 'cold' so you'd need a lot of baijiu ('hot') to pair a mermaid entree. After this he stopped answering my texts. :( - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The Headless Horseman, His Pumpkin, Play the Odd Couple in Sweet, Creepy Reese's Spot | Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adf... http://www.adweek.com/fil... )

"Imagine if the iconic Headless Horseman and his flaming pumpkin noggin had a bit of a love-hate relationship. They've been together so long that each knows just how to push the other's buttons. A new Halloween-themed ad for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups takes a peek at their creepy level of co-dependency. The Headless Horseman tries feeding Pumpkin Head a Reese's treat, and it ends badly, with a snuffed-out fire, and a meaner-than-usual Jack-o'-Lantern face. The Headless Horseman doesn't take direction well—and it turns out he may not really care if Pumpkin gets his chocolate fix or not." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Indy woman uses medieval combat training, sword to stop intruder (http://www.indystar.com/s... http://www.gannett-cdn.co... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"When a man broke into Karen Dolley’s home on Thursday night, her training in medieval combat came in handy. So did her sword. The 43-year-old woman said she awoke around midnight to the voice of a man in her house near 10th Street and Emerson Avenue on Indianapolis' Eastside. She leapt out of bed, turned on the lights and saw him standing in her living room, she said. Then her instincts kicked in. Dolley, standing 5-foot-6, said she immediately attacked, punching him about 10 times and cornering him in her bedroom. She reached for her gun in a nearby drawer, but she accidentally opened the wrong drawer during the chaos of the moment, so her gun wasn’t there. She reached for her backup weapon, a Japanese-styled sword called ninjato, which she keeps near her bed. Her intruder crouched in the bedroom as she held him at sword-point until police arrived, she said. She called 911 and police arrived within two minutes, she said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

I Remove Make-Up From Hollywood And Disney Dolls To Turn Them Into Inspiring Real-Life Women | Bored Panda (http://www.boredpanda.com... http://static.boredpanda.... http://static.boredpanda.... )

"When I came across Sonja Singh’s Tree Change Dolls™, the controversy of a certain line of dolls being overly sexualized, I wanted to explore further the idea that toys or playthings could have an impact on one’s identity. Through my work in Child’s Own Studio, I am familiar with the notion that toys can become a source of comfort, pride and meaning for a child (and even adults). The dolls we find in toy stores today are often licenced Disney™ characters or the heroines of Hollywood blockbuster movies that capitalize on the pull of fantasy, fictional characters to young consumers. But there are real-life people who are heroes too, with inspiring stories of courage, intelligence, strength and uniqueness. Could children learn about and be inspired by them through toys?" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Ichabod and Abbie are living together on Sleepy Hollow, Nobody Panic (http://io9.com/ichabod-an... http://i.kinja-img.com/ga... http://i.kinja-img.com/ga... )

"Don’t get me wrong; “Whispers in the Dark” is not an episode firing on all first-season cylinders. A lot of it didn’t matter (whatever federal-secrets plot they tossed into this week’s episode soup to get Abbie and Ichabod fighting the shadow demon is so flimsy we’re just skipping it), and some of it was hard to see (this is one of those episodes largely film from behind things as if stalking its own characters). Some of it was awkward (my attempts at Betsy Ross neutrality are already hitting snags), and some of it was hilarious (for a couple of folks who have an archive of supernatural literature at their fingertips, these people’s first response to literally every problem is just to try to beat the crap out of it). But this is also an episode in which the two of them actually detect a solution to their mysterious villain all by themselves without a diorama or anything, and after last season, I’ll happily take that. Escalator Death in China Heightens Safety Concerns - The New York Times (http://sinosphere.blogs.n... https://pbs.twimg.com/med... )

"A 4-year-old boy was killed after getting trapped in an escalator at a subway station in the southwestern city of Chongqing on Thursday. The boy was unattended when his hand became stuck in the escalator’s handrail, according to a statement by the city’s state-owned public transport operator and witness reports shared on social media. Photographs and video on social media show his body wedged under the end of the escalator handrail, with his legs protruding. He died of his injuries later in the day, the public transport operator said. It expressed “deep regret and sorrow” over the death and called on passengers to better supervise their children and older travelers." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Chinese news media commonly describe such escalators as “man-eating.” Some have noted that Lu Xun, one of China’s most venerated 20th-century writers, also used the phrase to describe the harsh living conditions of his time. “Lu Xun said that back then society was man-eating,” a Weibo user named Kun Cen commented. “Now we have man-eating escalators, swimming pools and statues that fall over, crushing people to death,” a reference to a monument that collapsed in Sichuan Province in August, killing a 10-year-old boy." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Guillermo del Toro’s House of Horrors - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/in... http://i1.nyt.com/images/... http://i1.nyt.com/images/... )

"The door swings open and there, surrounded by blood-red walls, is a hellhound with four hooded eyes and gaping fangs. The head of Frankenstein’s monster floats, disembodied and huge, a story above it. Peering at you from the living room, his fingers paging through a book, is the early-20th-century horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft. On a Victorian sofa, a demented doll stares down a bronze gargantua, Uncle Creepy and Cousin Eerie. Welcome to Guillermo del Toro’s imagination. Bleak House is what Mr. del Toro, the Mexican filmmaker known for the terrifying fantasy of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and American action-horror series like “Hellboy,” christened this pad, which serves as repository and inspiration. He writes there, and when he is in production, a handful of designers work in the repurposed garage. “We draw, draw, draw,” he said, every frame as detailed as animation." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"There are more than 700 pieces of original art in Bleak House, from R. Crumb and H.R. Giger works to concept sketches for Disney’s “Fantasia” and “Sleeping Beauty,” all of it chosen and carefully placed by Mr. del Toro. It’s less a man cave than a preteen fantasy, with crucifixion scenes and skeletons wedged beside beyond-cute figurines from Miyazaki movies. Schlitzie the Pinhead and Koo Koo the Bird Girl, made famous by the cult 1932 movie “Freaks,” are recreated life-size here; so are the visions of Charles Altamont Doyle, Arthur Conan Doyle’s father. “He used to see fairies, so Conan Doyle had him committed,” Mr. del Toro said. “I have one of his last portraits from the asylum.” “What’s inside this coffin?” and “What are all these large body parts here?” are questions that roll off the tongue at Bleak House. The cable guy fled. Mr. del Toro, 51, doesn’t live here, or in Bleak House 2 next door; his wife and daughters find them too scary, so they live nearby, in an un-Frankensteined home. But for him, these places are a refuge, and when his family isn’t around, he digs in." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Lab-grown 3D intestine regenerates gut lining in dogs -- ScienceDaily (http://www.sciencedaily.c... http://images.sciencedail... )

"Working with gut stem cells from humans and mice, scientists from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and the University of Pittsburgh have successfully grown healthy intestine atop a 3-D scaffold made of a substance used in surgical sutures. In a further step that takes their work well beyond proof of concept, researchers report their laboratory-created intestine successfully regenerated gut tissue in the colons of dogs with missing gut lining. The experiments, described ahead of print in the journal Regenerative Medicine, bring researchers closer to creating an implantable intestine as replacement therapy for a range of devastating disorders -- including infections, cancer and trauma -- that result in loss or death of gut tissue. Chief among them is a condition that affects 12 percent of premature newborns, called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which is marked by the rapid death of intestinal cells and permanent loss of intestinal tissue." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Female high-school students demand right to wear shorts - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"National Taichung Girls Senior High School students wore shorts to school yesterday or switched to shorts in front of the school to underscore their demand for the right to wear shorts. Responding to a “wear shorts to school today” campaign on Facebook, students wore shorts or changed into them when they started arriving at school at 7am. They were immediately marked down by drillmasters for violating school regulations on dress code. If marked down four times, the students receive a warning or are compelled to do school service. During a flag-raising ceremony last week, scores of students removed their skirts to reveal shorts underneath, shouting: “Equal rights for men and women” and “It’s no sin to wear shorts.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A decline in the number of doctoral students and the impact on international rankings have apparently led to a surge in subsidies universities are offering those willing to take on doctoral studies. The Ministry of Education released polls showing a surge in the number of the nation’s doctoral students, from 24,409 in 2004 to a peak of 34,178 students in 2010, before suffering annual decreases through last year. When child care costs more than rent, women stay at home. (http://www.slate.com/blog... http://www.slate.com/cont... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The stats are an effective argument for birth control among people of reproductive age who hope for financial security. Since the end of 1990, consumer prices have risen 76 percent, compared with a 168 percent jump in child care and nursery school costs. Today, residents of Binghamton, New York, pay three times their rent for child care, the worst ratio in the country. San Francisco seems like a steal—child care costs just half as much as rent in the city—until you consider that renting a spot in a bunk bed can cost nearly $1,000 in that farcical housing market. The cheapest child care in the nation, without adjusting for income or cost of living, is $344 per month in rural South Carolina. The most expensive costs $1,472 per month, in Washington, D.C. A single parent with two children aged 4 and 8 will spend a minimum of 11.7 percent of his budget on child care in New Orleans, or as much as 33.7 percent of his budget in Buffalo, New York. Infant care is even more expensive: In 33 states and D.C., parents of an infant will pay more for her care than for in-state tuition at a public college or university." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Discoveries Clear the Mists From the Original 'Swan Lake' - The New York Times (http://artsbeat.blogs.nyt... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The discoveries provide clarity on a number of issues, Simon Morrison, a professor of music at Princeton University who attended the presentation, said in an email. “We now know who authored the scenario, the name of the ballerina for whom the lead role was intended, the specifics of the original costumes and designs,” he wrote. “These issues were hitherto the subject of learned speculation by fine scholars, but without the key source in hand.” An analysis of the records established that the libretto was written by Vladimir Begichev, a Bolshoi official who was long believed to have had a hand in it, according to Mr. Konaev. He also said that the materials proved that the lead was originally supposed to have been danced by Lydia Geiten, who took part in rehearsals but then withdrew — apparently because she objected to Tchaikovsky’s score. (He noted that the new materials corroborated her statement, decades later, that she had refused to dance in Tchaikovsky’s first ballet because she had found it “boring.”) And the materials shed light on the Bolshoi’s 1880 revision, with choreography by Joseph Hansen." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
