Who could have predicted that getting rid of a team's starting quarterback, running back, wide receivers, and guards would result in a bad offense?

Union part ways with front office executive Nick Sakiewicz (http://www.philly.com/phi... ) http://media.philly.com/i...

Nick Sakiewicz was the public face of the Union since well before the team's first Major League Soccer season in 2010. Eventually, he and chairman/owner Jay Sugarman had different visions on the direction of the team. That cost Sakiewicz his job as chief executive officer and operating partner on Thursday. Sugarman, who works in New York and had limited contact over the years with the media was expansive during a Friday conference call in explaining Sakiewicz's ouster. Sakiewicz, a former professional goalkeeper, was often criticized for meddling too much in player acquisition. And as the Union has just three games left in a disappointing 9-15-7 season, Sugarman felt a change was desperately needed. "It was clear we necessarily weren't on the same page," Sugarman said on Friday in a conference call. - John B. - - (Edit | Remove)

Giant Panda Conservation Also Helps Other Unique Species in China - Extinction Countdown - Scientific American Blog Network (http://blogs.scientificam... ) http://blogs.scientificam... http://blogs.scientificam...

Conservationists have expressed this umbrella species theory for years but a paper published today in Biological Conservation proves it. The research looks at China’s endemic wildlife—species that exist nowhere else on Earth—and found that 70 percent of the country’s forest mammals, 70 percent of forest birds and 31 percent of forest amphibians all live within the panda’s geographic range and the nature reserves set aside to protect them. All told, 96 percent of this range overlaps with important conservation areas for other endemic forest species. “I was very pleasantly surprised by how well the panda does as an umbrella species,” says Stuart Pimm, the paper’s senior author and Doris Duke Professor of Conservation at Duke University. “The mountains of southwest China are a biodiversity hotspot. There are a lot of species that are protected by the panda’s range.” Pandas do protect a lot although a few species fall outside the umbrella. The research found that 14 of China’s endemic forest mammals, as well as 20 birds and 82 amphibians, are not currently protected by the giant panda’s current reserves. The paper identifies 10 locations that might be suitable for new or improved nature reserves to help expand that coverage. Many of these areas, located in Sichuan Province, which is considered the stronghold of giant pandas in the wild, are adjacent to existing reserves. - John B. - - (Edit | Remove)

MLS: Tranquillo Barnetta set to join Philadelphia Union - Planet Futbol - SI.com (http://www.si.com/planet-... ) http://cdn-jpg.si.com/sit...
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Swiss international Tranquillo Barnetta has decided to join the Philadelphia Union on a free transfer, a source with knowledge of the situation tells SI.com. Barnetta, a 30-year old midfielder with speed and creativity who can play wide or centrally, played in 22 German Bundesliga games last season for Schalke. He visited Philadelphia last week and trained with the Union to get a sense of the team and the city before making his decision. Barnetta is the latest MLS signing using the new targeted allocation money mechanism, which allows teams more freedom in paying down a player’s salary so that he doesn’t count as a Designated Player on the salary budget." - John B. - - (Edit | Remove)

The history of the log cutting goes way back to the old NASL days (late 70's), when Timber Jim Serrill brought his chainsaw to games and would slice off part of a log whenever the Timbers scored. Jim is one of the best guys you'll ever meet and to this day is beloved by fans. He retired a few years ago, now it's Timber Joey, though Adi thought he'd have a go today. :-) - vicster - - (Edit | Remove)

Famed 'A Beautiful Mind' mathematician John Nash, wife, killed in N.J. Turnpike crash (http://www.nj.com/middles... ) http://imgick.nj.com/home...
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
John Forbes Nash Jr., the brilliant Princeton University mathematician whose life story was the subject of the film "A Beautiful Mind," was killed with his wife Alicia on Saturday in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. Nash was 86. Alicia Nash was 82. The couple lived in Princeton Junction. Police said the two were in a taxi traveling southbound in the left lane of the turnpike when the driver of the Ford Crown Victoria lost control as he tried to pass a Chrysler in the center lane, crashing into a guard rail near Interchange 8A in Monroe Township, according to State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams. The couple was ejected from the car, Williams said. "It doesn't appear that they were wearing seatbelts," he said. The second vehicle also crashed into the guard rail, Williams said. The taxi driver was extricated from the vehicle and flown to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with non-life-threatening injuries. He was identified as Tark Girgis, 46, of Elizabeth. A passenger in the Chrysler was treated for neck pain. The crash was reported at 4:30 p.m. The couple were pronounced dead at the scene at 5:18 p.m., said authorities. - John B. - - (Edit | Remove)
