The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct additional surveys at the Middlesex County College construction site where workers on Thursday unearthed an old 500-pound bomb, officials said. Representatives from the Corps visited the campus Friday to investigate and surveyors will return Tuesday for another two days of testing with ground-penetrating radar, the college said in a statement. "The work is expected to take two days and excavating will be suspended until the site has been cleared," college officials said. Constuction crews found the bomb at 2 p.m. Thursday at the site of the future West Hall enrollment center building on the corner of Parkside Drive and Campus Drive East. Members of a military ordnance disposal unit at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst removed the bomb and took it to the base where it was detonated Thursday night. The bomb, which the college said was 38 inches long and 12 inches wide, dates to World War II. The college is built on a section of the former U.S. Army Raritan Arsenal, which closed in 1963. The Army Corps has surveyed the former arsenal area extensively for years and has a long-range plan in place to excavate possible buried munitions it has located. Chris Gardner, spokesman for the Army Corps' regional office, said Friday the construction area where the bomb was found was not among locations where significant ordnance had previously been discovered. - John B. - -

It occurs to me that one advantage of Flickr hosting is that Flickr automatically makes square versions of images that could be used for avatars and such. - John B. - -
