Wow. This post about Holodomor actually has very reasonable and well thought out comments. I thought there were still a lot or denialists:http://m.theatlantic.com/interna...

doing a search on something in acoustics - the articles from ~1947 in WoS are all in UPPERCASE SO IT'S LIKE THEY'RE YELLING AT ME - just because i'm looking at articles on acoustics doesn't mean i can't hear! :)

Do you think they were all uppercase so that they could limit the number of ascii characters used, and hence take up less computer space? - Christina Pikas - - (Edit | Remove)

As long as you're not on the receiving end of SH's bile, he's probably amusing. Once you've been there, it's harder to be amused. Especially once you've been explicitly labeled an enemy of the Movement. - Christina Pikas - - (Edit | Remove)

I may not any more (dunno: I mostly ignore SH), and I think he was shocked that instead of converting to a Harnadian stance I stood up to his abuse. AFAIK, he ignored me after that. - Christina Pikas - - (Edit | Remove)

a nice thing about Inspec that I don't remember anyone commenting on is how they put in the translation information for the old Soviet journals - they put both citations together in a record.

so scopus has added a ton of books. good. but they aren't exporting right to refworks, boo, and apparently, they don't actually have the publication location in the record so you can't even do a proper citation without looking elsewhere. puzzled as to why they would leave it like this

someone i work with from time to time at mpow was just selected as the next president of Alabama State University (yay!) ... but boo for people who said she got it for reasons other than her qualifications and boo for the hurtful comments (yes, she does have a phd).

so apparently theoldreader is still available? am I imagining things? I remember them shutting down a while ago??
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
they shut off new registrations and kicked out people that jumped on it after greader shut down. they started to open back up though after they rebuilt their architecture, but they lost a lot of goodwill for how they handled things - Christina Pikas - - (Edit | Remove)

every time P.D. publishes anything (and it's always with a pro-publisher spin) he lists that he's a former science librarian. that annoys me.

i'm not questioning the rigor of his actual research, just the spin. like here: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://publishers.org/pre... ; title="http://publishers.org/pre... ; - Christina Pikas - - (Edit | Remove)

Jan Velterop makes a good point on liblicense: transferring your copyright *is* paying the publisher. you're giving them something of value to get the publishing service in return. better to just pay article page charges so it's transparent and you can get cc-by.
