"A common expression of bucket-list chasers is 'Live every day like it's your last.' But when you do that, you're trying to stop time, lock it in like a snow globe. I much prefer the idea of living every day like you're alive. Then, you're in the river of time; you're a story instead of a list." --"Kill Your Bucket List," by Edward Readicker-Henderson. What's this music? They used it as a bumper on Saturday's "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!" http://www.npr.org/progra... at the 8:48 mark on segment 1. I've heard it before but I don't know music. Help, please?
10 years ago - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
I was hoping the music was listed *somewhere*. Can't find it. However, I found out that Peter Sagal did a Reddit AMA earlier this month http://www.reddit.com/r/I... Fun! (And via that, I learned that there's an xkcd cartoon about Peter Sagal https://xkcd.com/997/ ) - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

NPR answered my email: "Thank you for contacting NPR. We're happy to assist you. The song you heard was M79 by Vampire Weekend. We make an effort to list music interludes for our programs. Since Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me is produced in Chicago and not at NPR headquarters, the process for receiving and posting their music interludes is a little different. It does not look like their music has regularly been posted. We will be certain to inquire about whether that info can be posted, however please understand that we cannot guarantee any immediate change. We appreciate your patience and we regret any inconvenience. Thank you for listening to NPR, and for your continued support of public broadcasting. For the latest news and information, visit NPR.org. Book ban defended by Quebec school bus company http://www.cbc.ca/news/ca...

“The policy came under fire after Sarah Auger, an eight-year-old girl in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, complained she was no longer allowed to read books on the school bus.  The bus driver suggested fellow students might stand up to see what she was reading or she might poke herself in the eye with the corners of the book.” - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

"Home | Barstow, CA, USA | (I am at my grandmother’s, as are a few of my cousins. One is sitting in the living room watching Jersey Shore as I walk in. It’s worth noting that undetectable earthquakes are highly common in my area.) Me: *looks at the TV* “You know every time you watch that show, a book commits suicide.” Cousin: *rolls eyes* “Don’t be stupid.” (Just then, for no apparent reason, a book falls off of my grandmother’s shelf.) Cousin: *staring at it, flabbergasted* Me: *without even batting an eye* “You were saying?” - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

Simple Rules for Healthy Eating http://www.nytimes.com/20...

"Below are the general rules I live by. They’re the ones I share with patients, with friends and with family. ... But I acknowledge up front that they may apply only to healthy people without metabolic disorders. ... They are not “laws” and should not be treated as such. No specific nutrients will be demonized, and none will be held up as miracles. But these recommendations make sense to me, and they’ve helped me immensely." - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)
1. Get as much of your nutrition as possible from a variety of completely unprocessed foods. 1b. Eat lightly processed foods less often. 1c. Eat heavily processed foods even less often. 2. Eat as much home-cooked food as possible, which should be prepared according to Rule 1. 3. Use salt and fats, including butter and oil, as needed in food preparation. 4. When you do eat out, try to eat at restaurants that follow the same rules. 5. Drink mostly water, but some alcohol, coffee and other beverages are fine. 6. Treat all beverages with calories in them as you would alcohol. 7. Eat with other people, especially people you care about, as often as possible. - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

“A New ‘Wrinkle in Time’ - Madeleine L’Engle’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ has sold 14 million copies since its publication in 1962. Now, a never-before-seen passage cut from an early draft is shedding surprising light on the author’s political philosophy” http://www.wsj.com/articl...

“And though some of her books had political themes, [Madeleine L’Engle] wasn’t known to write overtly about politics. That is, until her granddaughter, Charlotte Jones Voiklis, came across an unknown three-page passage that was cut before publication. […] A witches’ brew of science fiction and fantasy, Christian theology and a hint of politics, “A Wrinkle in Time” has long been considered influenced by the Cold War. It explores the dangers of conformity, and presents evil as a world whose inhabitants’ thoughts and actions are controlled by a sinister, disembodied brain. - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

Ms. Voiklis said she wanted readers to know the book wasn’t a simple allegory of communism. Instead, it’s about the risk of any country—including a democracy—placing too much value on security. The tension between safety and personal freedom is an idea that resonates in today’s politics. “It’s normal to be afraid,” said Ms. Voiklis, who manages her late grandmother’s estate full-time in New York. “But you can’t let the fear control your decisions. Otherwise, you risk becoming like Camazotz.” - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

Cod Signal: As a sort-of last-minute favor, I'm in charge of the book club discussion in a couple of weeks of the book, City of Scoundrels, by Gary Krist. I'm having trouble finding a reader's guide. I think there's one in the paperback edition, but it doesn't appear on the publisher's website and I only have the hardbound. It's nonfiction, so NoveList doesn't have one. Does anyone know where I can find a reader's guide or discussion questions? Thanks!

Question: Is there a way to look at only "my comments" (posts I've commented on) without also looking at "my likes"?
10 years ago - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
I'm not sure, but as a temporary solution you could use bookmarks for this. after commenting someone's post just press the little banner next to the smiling emoticon, and then use "my bookmarks" to check discussions. - bezdomnyj82 - - (Edit | Remove)

Interesting. The friendfeed-media.com links still work. e.g., http://m.friendfeed-media... which was attached to Big Joe Silence's post (Neil Finn - The Spirit Of The Stairs (live at Abbey Road, 1998) So, if you had some Listening Room posts saved but hadn't saved the actual mp3s, you might still have a chance. Maybe.

There might be a glitch in Likes and Unlikes: if I'm in the everybody-feed and click on the number next to the smilie or the frownie, I get nothing. It works fine if I click on the number while in someone's feed, but not in the multi-feed. (P.S. Thanks you, Senape, for frenf.it.)

to see the list of user who liked something there is a trick that sometimes works, for now. This could work if the post/comment is not one of yours. Just add a like and then click on the number again, and the list should be visible. Then you can remove the like I you feel the need. By the way, this bug is only on the new "home": if you visit your feed page, or a specific room feed other than home, you should be able to see the list as well. - bezdomnyj82 - - (Edit | Remove)

(Sorry, me again.) Umm... something's screwy. I can click on everyone else's individual posts and open the post. When I try to do that with mine, it takes me back to the Home page. If I copy/paste the direct address of the post into the address bar, it still reroutes to the Home page. But only for my posts, not for anyone else's. Is anyone else getting this?

The six attributes of the adventurer, from The Bridge of San Luis Rey, by Thornton Wilder.

"Uncle Pio came of a good Castilian house, illegitimately. At the age of ten he ran away to Madrid from his father’s hacienda and was pursued without diligence. He lived ever after by his wits. He possessed the six attributes of the adventurer — a memory for names and faces, with the aptitude for altering his own; the gift of tongues; inexhaustible invention; secrecy; the talent for falling into conversation with strangers; and that freedom from conscience that springs from a contempt for the dozing rich he preyed upon.” - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)
