The Invention Of Christian America - Digg (http://digg.com/2015/the-... )

After all, it wasn’t until 1954 — over 175 years after our nation’s founding — that “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. Two years later, “In God We Trust” became the official American motto. This move toward national religiosity wasn’t, as some1 have assumed, borne entirely out of a response to the godless Communists. Kruse’s book argues that the notion of a Christian America — a country not just comprising Christians but fundamentally Christian in its structure, nature, and history — was cobbled together in the 1930s and '40s by a group of businessmen and ministers who needed each other to unite against a common enemy: FDR and the New Deal. - toddhoffious - - (Edit | Remove)

Through a series of experiments, Oyserman and Lewis found that if subjects thought about a far-off event in terms of days, rather than months or years, they seemed like they would happen sooner. For example, the authors write, something like a friend’s wedding “seemed 16.3 days sooner when considered in days rather than months and 11.4 months sooner when considered in months rather than years.” - toddhoffious - - (Edit | Remove)

A general prediction: as we see middle class jobs evaporate and the disparity of incomes increase and the successful establishment of kleptocracy, we'll see more and more people gravitate to the dark economy as a way to make a living. Which of course makes the whole cycle worse - toddhoffious - - (Edit | Remove)

I usually plant starters that I grow from seed. It takes a lot of work and a lot of room. So I decided this year to grow directly from seed for nearly everything. We have such a long growing season why get a jump on things? My calendar is notifying me everyday that something needs to be transplanted. Today it was peppers. So I guess I should start the seeds? The thing is the weather has been cool. It was much warmer in december. Put the seeds in now and I don't think they would germinate.

The soil temps are too low. Fucking strange. Reason #100 I don't want to be a farmer is we'll get no apricots or plums this year. The early warm weather caused an early bloom that later wind nocked off so no fruit is developing. - toddhoffious - - (Edit | Remove)
Do you use an app to track transplanting times Todd, or do you do it the old fashioned way? I got my tomatoes started in good time this year, but I keep missing the boat on the early, cool weather veggies. - Ken Morley - - (Edit | Remove)

We’ve all heard people say, “That tattoo won’t look so nice in 20 years,” but how about, “That tattoo won’t play nice with future wearable technology!” Err … What? It seems that some people with dark wrist tattoos are having problems with the heart rate monitor on their Apple Watches. http://www.digitaltrends.... - Halil - - (Edit | Remove)

The new version has a watch extension; the ability to share over Facebook, mail, etc; and you can now annotate location pictures or even change pictures any time you want.

Include a URL link to the image in the post. That way you can also include an image with an article added via the bookmarklet. Not as elegant as the FF bookmarklet, but it works. - Nils Sandin - - (Edit | Remove)

Max Tegmark: Physics, Math and the Ultimate Nature... - The 7th Avenue Project: Thinking Persons' Radio (http://7thavenueproject.c... )

Just as some of us are getting used to the idea of the multiverse, along comes MIT physicist Max Tegmark telling us we’re not thinking big enough. According to Max, there are actually multiple multiverses, containing endless copies of and variations on the “pocket universe” we’ve quaintly come to think of as everything. Lest you think he’s tripping, Max assures us that he’s only high on mathematics and logic. And if the conclusions sound farfetched, well, progress in physics has often meant taking leave of our senses, ditching everyday intuition and trusting the science instead. - toddhoffious - - (Edit | Remove)
