"Children will be given library cards either at birth, age three or four - or in P1. The scheme will also see libraries working with schools and communities to promote the services they offer to families. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon joined P1 members at Glasgow's Mitchell Library to promote the initiative. The children are part of Glasgow Life's pilot which will target 2,000 pupils in six areas with issues of lower literacy. From 7 September, every baby registered in the Glasgow area will be given a library card by the registrar. Ms Sturgeon said: "Our libraries are often the hub of a local community - providing vital access to information and resources that people would otherwise not have. "Now, thanks to £80,000 Scottish government funding, every local authority in Scotland will trial methods to give children automatic membership to their local library."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

This Polish Hammer Thrower Won A Gold Medal, Then Got So Drunk He Used It To Pay For A Cab - Demanjo News (http://www.demanjo.com/ne... https://uproxx.files.word... )

"Polish hammer thrower Pawel Fajdek finished at the top of the podium at the world championships on Sunday in Beijing and after celebrating a little too much, used his gold medal to pay for his taxi fare. Fajdek hit the town to celebrate after claiming the gold on Sunday with a throw of 80.88 metres, and ended up using the medal to pay for his ride home after having a few too many in the Chinese capital. After waking up in a panic upon discovering he no longer had the memento, Fajdek contacted the police, who helped him retrace his steps and locate the taxi driver from the night before." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Thousands expected to join foot-washing ritual - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"A massive foot-washing activity to demonstrate filial piety is set to be held in Taipei in October, event organizers said. The activity, which drew 20,000 participants last year, is scheduled to take place on Oct. 11 in front of the Presidential Office Building. Republic of China Sports Federation president Chang Chao-kuo (張朝國) said organizers hope that as many as 30,000 participants would take part this year, calling it an opportunity to “express gratitude for those who have helped us with love and dedication.” Chang said that parents are not the only targets of this year’s foot-washing ritual. “You can [wash feet] for your elders, teachers, coaches and mentors,” he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Chang said that young people should also take the initiative to show their gratitude to their seniors, telling them to “give me a chance” to return the favors they have received. When the foot-washing event was first held in 2013, 4,363 pairs of feet were washed, shattering a Guinness World Record for the most people washing their elders’ feet at the same time. The standard ritual calls for children to first bow to their parents, kneel to present them a cup of tea, massage and pound their backs, and then kneel on one knee to wash their feet." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The Fat Jew is not alone: The shady business of Internet joke stealing. (http://www.slate.com/arti... http://www.slate.com/cont... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"But the Internet has accelerated the joke-stealing process. Now, a shameless social media personality can copy and paste jokes on Twitter in seconds—no need to book a comedy club gig or land a late-night TV appearance—and rack up thousands upon thousands of followers who don’t know where the joke came from. Comedians are now seeing their jokes stolen online by pastors, musicians, reality television contestants, and pop culture “curators” like Ostrovsky, all of whom can benefit from the follower boost that comes with posting funny tweets—and who are not affected professionally by the comedy-world norms that keep stand-ups from stealing. Why not? As one Twitter user said of the plagiarism controversy raging around the stolen jokes he loves to read: “WHO CARES.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Agreed. I think relying on community norms isn't going to work for a joke thief with five million followers. Odds are that most of those followers aren't creatives and don't understand the level of work that goes into this kind of field. - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Pearl Jam’s Bassist Has Personally Funded More Than a Dozen Skateboard Parks in the Midwest | VICE | United States (http://www.vice.com/read/... )

"I was visiting Pine Ridge to see the new Grindline-built skatepark at the Wounded Knee District School. In a place facing such hardship, the park represents a source of positivity for the community. The park was paid for by Levi's Skateboarding and, full disclosure, they flew me out to South Dakota for this trip. While there I met Walt Pourier, head of the Stronghold Society, a group whose goal is to inspire hope and confidence in the reservation's youth through a number of outlets, mainly skateboarding. With the help of Vans and Pearl Jam's bassist, Jeff Ament, Walt was able to get phase one of a skatepark built in 2011 and, thanks to his constant diligence, he eventually convinced Levi's to come in and not only finish phase two in Pine Ridge, but also build the smaller, satellite park on the Wounded Knee school grounds where I met him." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Tourism authorities seek ‘super blogger’ - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"Tourism authorities in the US, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia jointly launched a tourism campaign in Taiwan yesterday to recruit a Taiwanese “super blogger” to travel to an island in each nation or region free of charge. In return, the blogger is required to write five travel stories and record a three-minute video clip about the tour after returning to Taiwan. The four islands featured in the campaign are Tinian of the Northern Mariana Islands, Koh Chang in Thailand, Coron Island in the Philippines and Tioman Island in Malaysia. The chosen blogger would spend five days traveling on each island, with the value of the entire trip estimated at more than NT$25,000, the organizer said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"It is the second time the organizer has held the contest to select a travel blogger. To enter the contest, one must be a Taiwanese citizen who is at least 18 years old. Applicants must produce a 30-second video clip and upload it to YouTube, in which they should talk about themselves, their most significant travel experiences and their dreams. A committee formed by foreign service officials is to choose what it considers to be the 12 most creative video presentations, with netizens then voting for their favorite. Those making the top five are to be entered into the final competition. Contenders in the final competition are to be further evaluated through talent shows and a travel knowledge quiz." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

""How about we do some handstands now?" suggests swimming instructor Olivia Ginty to her class at an indoor Toronto pool. Her adult students disappear underwater and brightly coloured mermaid tails emerge, flopping in the air. Once they catch their breath, there are woops of joy and applause from the group. "Awesome, very good!" exclaims Ginty. Welcome to mermaid school. Aquamermaid surfaced in Montreal in February, has just floated into Toronto and will make the leap to Ottawa come September. Sixty dollars covers tail rental plus a one-hour class where students ages seven and up learn how to swim like mermaids. "It's really fun to be a mermaid," declares nine-year-old Sarina Heydary. After some instruction, she gleefully glides through the water strapped in a sea green tail made of stretchy fabric pulled up to her waist and a plastic fin at the bottom. "Business is great. We actually have a lot of popularity in our adult classes, surprisingly," says Ginty, a certified lifeguard who calls herself a "mermaid instructor."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Tainan temples host ‘ghostly guests’ - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"During Ghost Month, temples in Tainan traditionally show compassion for souls by hanging paper lanterns to light the way for the weary, ghostly travelers, doling out victuals every day with sacrificial feasts and providing model guest houses, called hanlin suo (翰林所) — named after hostels for respected scholars in ancient China — so that they may rest and bathe before returning to the netherworld. Hsieh Chi-feng (謝奇峰), an expert on local temple customs and folk culture, said that temples in Tainan practice the traditional hospitality rites for ghosts because the city was the first capital of Taiwan and had preserved traditional religious rituals better than other cities. Hsieh said that the hanlin suo still found in some temples refer to guest chambers for well-bred ghosts of the shi (士) class, or scholar-officials." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"The model houses are made at the beginning of the month and are usually burnt after the Ghost Festival on the 15th day of the month, Hsieh said, but some temples leave the hanlin suo for the entire month so that the “good brethren” may enjoy the temple’s hospitality for the whole month. Model bathrooms, often furnished with soap and towels, are placed in front of the hanlin suo, he said. Hospitality rites for wandering spirits by private households and the red lanterns that accompanied them were once a common sight in Tainan during Ghost Month, but such customs have ceased in modern times with the advent of electricity and replacement of traditional family homes with apartment complexes, Hsieh said, adding that some Tainan elders still maintain this tradition." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Wolf pack discovered in Northern California (http://www.mercurynews.co... http://extras.mnginteract... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"In a major breakthrough for wildlife conservation, a pack of gray wolves has been discovered in southeastern Siskiyou County, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Thursday. The wolves, dubbed the Shasta Pack, consist of two adults and five pups. Fish and Wildlife captured photographic evidence of the pack after spotting a lone wolf in May and July. Wolves were eliminated in California in the 1920s, but have recently begun a comeback. A male named OR7 entered California in 2011 but left the state in 2013 to join a pack in Oregon. Fish and Wildlife presumes the parents of the cubs came from Oregon, though officials do not think they are a direct descendent of OR7. The department is awaiting the results of a DNA analysis to better determine the animals' lineage, and it plans to place a tracking collar on at least one of the adults." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The best British political insults - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.u... http://i.telegraph.co.uk/... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Writers often have bad things to say about politicians ("they tell lies, even when they don't have to," said Gore Vidal) and have mocked them mercilessly. Poet ee cummings, himself the son of a professor of sociology and political science, once wrote a poem about politicians that included the lines: "A politician is an arse upon/ which everyone has sat except a man" But it's as nothing compared to the insults politicians have hurled at each other. As memories of the 2015 general election fade and the battle over the Labour leadership begins, we look at 32 of the most memorable British political insults, including about Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and David Cameron. Not forgetting Jeremy Corbyn, who has been hit with insults from the Tories and his own party. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

TIL: Hong Kong Disneyland is the only Disney Park without a Haunted Mansion (http://www.escapistmagazi... http://cdn.themis-media.c... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"There has never been a Disney Park without a Haunted Mansion. Since the first opened in 1969, the stately towers and Grim Grinning Ghosts have become as much a part of the Disneyland legacy as Main Street and the Cinderella's Castle. But when Disney broke ground in Hong Kong back in 2003, it was clear that the classic attraction couldn't make the cut. In a city where ancestor worship is a part of life and ghosts are considered real threats, Disney's frolicking spooks didn't fit in. "We wanted to be sensitive to any cultural concerns regarding ghosts or the spirit world with our Asian guests," says Mark Schirmer, Executive Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering. "So just lifting the idea of the Haunted Mansion from our other parks really wasn't going to work. But the idea of mystery, intrigue and the supernatural we thought may have a broader appeal."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"BGDB: How do you honor your culture in pursuing ballet/dance? EVF: The Kingdom of Tonga is a small island nation with a proud tradition of exploration. I see what I’m doing as one of the first Tongan ballet dancers as an exploration. When I first started dancing I never thought that I was a pioneer, that I would make history, or become a role model. That’s the power of ballet though! This summer I was invited to perform the first classical ballet variation danced in Tonga as part of the coronation. You can’t imagine how thrilling, humbling, and terrifying that was! It’s amazing at my age and while still training as a ballet dancer to have these opportunities and to be in a position to influence others. I get messages from Tongan kids around the world who are now starting ballet classes for the first time. I tell them to always remember who they are and where they come from – to not try and fit in but to stand out and be proud of our heritage and who we are. Tongans are brown skinned, muscular people. We don’t fit the image most people have when they think of ballet. So what! Let’s change the image. Let’s be so good that they can’t ignore us!" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"BGDB: Can you share with us some advice for parents and young girls alike who are interested in pursuing Ballet? EVF: My family’s not rich. In fact, we’ve struggled a lot this last year when my father, who is a disabled Marine Corps veteran, couldn’t continue working. My parents used up their savings to keep me in ballet. My mom sold her clothing to pay for my pointe shoes. I was at the barre in class with girls talking about their European vacations while I was wondering if we were going to be evicted that day and hoping my pointe shoes wouldn’t break down before my mom could find a way to get new ones. I see the miracles my mom pulls off every day to keep me training – all while caring for my special needs brother and my father. To the last second I didn’t think we were going to make it to the coronation in Tonga this summer but she barked up every tree in the forest to make it happen. If you’re serious about wanting a career as a ballet dancer, don’t let any obstacles stand in your way. Maybe your obstacles aren’t financial – maybe they’re physical or mental – the point is don’t let anything stop you. Be realistic about what it takes and whether you’re willing to pay the price and once you decide to go for it don’t stop until you get there. When you doubt or get tired, think of the next generation of little brown girls who’s dance journeys will be made that much better because of what you are doing today!" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

A Fading Tradition in Spain Gets an Unusual Boost: Shepherd School - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Mr. Jordana said he was still coming to terms with the idea that shepherding could be taught in a school and rewarded with a certificate delivered by the regional ministry of agriculture. “It used to be just something that you learn from your dad,” he said. Still, he acknowledged that without the arrival of people like Ms. Madrid from the cities there would soon be nobody willing to take over the ancestral shepherd’s crook, as well as to maintain rural traditions and remote communities like Aguiró. “The survival of sheep isn’t at risk — because there will always be a sheep farming industry — but the values and traditions of the shepherds certainly are,” Mr. Jordana said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"“Until recently, the shepherd was often the idiot or the cripple in the family, the one who couldn’t do the most important farming work, but this is now a job for which you get respect,” said Armand Flaujat, who tends sheep for seven farmers during the summer months, high up in the meadows of Catalonia’s largest nature park, which are covered with snow the rest of the year. Mr. Flaujat, however, also stressed that the survival of his job was closely linked to that of the brown bear, which was reintroduced in the Pyrenees two decades ago, using bears from Slovenia, as part of a multimillion-euro European Union environmental program called Life. The reintroduction of the bears caused tensions with local farmers, who demanded money from the European Union to protect their livestock from the bears, and to add mountain shepherds to safeguard their sheep. The subsidies mean that mountain shepherds in Catalonia can earn almost 3,000 euros, about $3,330, a month; the national minimum monthly wage in Spain is €756." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
