"A 91-year-old Avon Park man shot at landscapers for getting grass clippings on his vehicle. Just before noon on Sep. 17, landscaper Robert Hendrix was working at a home on Palo Verde Drive in Avon Park ad accidentally got grass clippings on Max Horton's vehicle. Horton started arguing with Hendrix, pulled out a gun, and ordered Hendrix to get on his knees. Horton reportedly told Hendrix he was going to kill him." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Idaho: Hiking Trail Closed Because of Aggressive Goats - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Concerns about aggressive mountain goats have led the United States Forest Service to temporarily close the Scotchman Peak Trail, which leads to the summit of the tallest mountain in Bonner County. Visitors to the hiking trail have been offering food to the goats or even allowing them to eat from their hands, according to the Forest Service. That can cause the animals to behave aggressively in an attempt to get food from humans. There have been reports of goats trying to head-butt or charge hikers; one hiker was bitten. A hiker was fatally injured in 2010 after being gored by a goat in Olympia National Park in Washington." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Inuit Study Adds Twist to Omega-3 Fatty Acids’ Health Story - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Today, at least 10 percent of Americans regularly take fish oil supplements. But recent trials have failed to confirm that the pills prevent heart attacks or stroke. And now the story has an intriguing new twist. A study published on Thursday in the journal Science reported that the ancestors of the Inuit evolved unique genetic adaptations for metabolizing omega-3s and other fatty acids. Those gene variants had drastic effects on Inuit’s bodies, reducing their heights and weights. Rasmus Nielsen, a geneticist at the University of California, Berkeley, and an author of the new study, said that the discovery raised questions about whether omega-3 fats really were protective for everyone, despite decades of health advice. “The same diet may have different effects on different people,” he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"The adaptation did more than just change blood levels of fatty acids, the scientists found. Inuit who carried two copies of the variant gene were on average an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than those without a copy. “That’s quite extreme,” said Dr. Nielsen." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

BBC Breakfast: A robot said 'f**k you' to Charlie Stayt and Louise Minchin live on air | Metro News (http://metro.co.uk/2015/0... https://metrouk2.files.wo... )

"TV viewers had a bit of a giggle when a robot appeared to swear live on BBC Breakfast. The show was coming to an end when Charlie Stayt introduced an artificially intelligent robot named Linda behind him. Linda raised some eyebrows when it appeared to say ‘f**k you’ to Stayt and co-anchor Louise Minchin. OK, so it was obviously trying to say ‘thank you’ but it sounded an awful lot like something ruder." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Why Is That Dog Looking at Me? - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"More than one experiment has made some things pretty clear. Dogs look at humans much more than wolves do. Wolves tend to put their nose to the Tupperware and keep at it. This evidence has led to the unsurprising conclusion that dogs are more socially connected to humans and wolves more self-reliant. Once you get beyond the basics, however, agreement is elusive. In order to assess the latest bit of research, published in Biology Letters Tuesday by Monique Udell at Oregon State University, some context can be drawn from an earlier experiment that got a lot of attention more than a decade ago." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Trevor Noah's comments on the Vanity Fair photo show he doesn't understand comedy's gender problem. (http://www.slate.com/blog... https://pbs.twimg.com/med... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Whether or not Vanity Fair intended the photo as a jarring critique of the endemic sexism in contemporary comedy and television—let’s go with “not”—it is an effective visual signifier of a bleak reality that can’t be explained away as coincidental or merit-based. For anyone who thinks about issues of diversity and gender equity, looking at the overwhelming maleness of this bourbon-nursing pack is like looking into the sun." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"While the harsh reaction to Vanity Fair’s photo should be read as an indictment of barriers to women in comedy, Vanity Fair editors, too, make deliberate choices that affect the gendered landscape of TV. Noah won’t start at his post until Sept. 28, but he made it into the boys’ club; Samantha Bee and Chelsea Handler, both of whom have forthcoming late-night shows in the works, did not. The next time a magazine pulls a move like this, Noah would find better footing lampooning his own industry from The Daily Show pulpit than defending it." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Instead of Arrests, Subway Dancers Are Getting a Stage Above Ground - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"As part of a pilot program aimed at curbing illicit performances on the rails, the de Blasio administration is urging dancers to take their act above ground, setting aside outdoor space for performances that can allow dancers to earn tips legally. Though officers may still pursue arrests or issue summonses for soliciting on trains, they have been urged to consider the alternative approach: handing out the cards with information about the dance initiative. Every transit officer now carries the small, brightly colored square cards. Roughly 200 have been handed out to dance groups since officers began the effort in May. “It’s very refreshing for us and our officers to have another alternative when we’re out there,” said Joseph Fox, the chief of the Police Department’s Transit Bureau. “What this program has given us is something in between warning and admonish, and enforcement.” - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

U.S. Drops Charges That Professor Shared Technology With China - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"The schematics, prosecutors said, revealed the design of a device known as a pocket heater. The equipment is used in superconductor research, and Dr. Xi had signed an agreement promising to keep its design a secret. But months later, long after federal agents had led Dr. Xi away in handcuffs, independent experts discovered something wrong with the evidence at the heart of the Justice Department’s case: The blueprints were not for a pocket heater. Faced with sworn statements from leading scientists, including an inventor of the pocket heater, the Justice Department on Friday afternoon dropped all charges against Dr. Xi, an American citizen. It was an embarrassing acknowledgment that prosecutors and F.B.I. agents did not understand — and did not do enough to learn — the science at the heart of the case before bringing charges that jeopardized Dr. Xi’s career and left the impression that he was spying for China." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Dr. Xi’s lawyer, Peter Zeidenberg, said that despite the complexity, it appeared that the government never consulted with experts before taking the case to a grand jury. As a result, prosecutors misconstrued the evidence, he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

How I Learned You Probably Shouldn't Try to Turn Raccoons into Pets | VICE | United States (http://www.vice.com/read/... https://vice-images.vice.... *:*&output-quality=)

"The raccoon kept coming by, though, and every time he made contact, it was with a little less trepidation. Eventually, to my delight, he would come sit with me on the porch as I sipped a beer or read a book. Maybe one day, I thought, I could walk it down the street on a leash. Raccoons are very smart. Not only do they have opposable thumbs that allow them to manipulate things, they have legitimate problem-solving skills. But eventually, my raccoon did something I didn't know had ever been recorded in such a creature—he got comfortable enough to play pranks. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Part of the problem is that many of China's fossils are dug from the ground by farmers and then sold to museums, other institutes and private dealers. Liaoning's farmers can often earn more by selling fossils than they can by tilling the soil. Although China has strict laws against private fossil sales, the black market thrives. "Scientists, universities and institutes face a real dilemma, because if they buy the fossil they are supporting this industry. But if they are offering you a fossil that is new to science, and it possesses anatomical features that fill in big holes in our knowledge, it's also kind of unethical … to not buy it," says Pittman." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” Is Our Most Misread Poem (http://www.theparisreview... http://www.theparisreview... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"And almost everyone gets it wrong. This is the most remarkable thing about “The Road Not Taken”—not its immense popularity (which is remarkable enough), but the fact that it is popular for what seem to be the wrong reasons. It’s worth pausing here to underscore a truth so obvious that it is often taken for granted: Most widely celebrated artistic projects are known for being essentially what they purport to be. When we play “White Christmas” in December, we correctly assume that it’s a song about memory and longing centered around the image of snow falling at Christmas. When we read Joyce’s Ulysses, we correctly assume that it’s a complex story about a journey around Dublin as filtered through many voices and styles. A cultural offering may be simple or complex, cooked or raw, but its audience nearly always knows what kind of dish is being served." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"According to this reading, then, the speaker will be claiming “ages and ages hence” that his decision made “all the difference” only because this is the kind of claim we make when we want to comfort or blame ourselves by assuming that our current position is the product of our own choices (as opposed to what was chosen for us or allotted to us by chance). The poem isn’t a salute to can-do individualism; it’s a commentary on the self-deception we practice when constructing the story of our own lives. “The Road Not Taken” may be, as the critic Frank Lentricchia memorably put it, “the best example in all of American poetry of a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” But we could go further: It may be the best example in all of American culture of a wolf in sheep’s clothing." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Clearwater, 40, was described as "laying like a mermaid" across the car's hood as a friend took a photo of him. Trouble ensued after the car's owner removed Clearwater from the car, which was parked on the 1500 block of 6th Avenue in downtown Seattle. Describing the July 29 incident, a Seattle Police Department detective said Clearwater walked up to the car, complimented it and spoke briefly with the car's owner. The owner was walking away when he turned back and saw Clearwater sprawled on the car. Concerned his car would be damaged, the owner pulled Clearwater off of it. A shoving match followed, the detective said, before Clearwater climbed back on the Lamborghini. Clearwater jumped on the hood and punched the windshield before police arrived, the detective said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Director Jean-Jacques Annaud had a fine bromance with a Mongolian wolf named Cloudy during the production of his latest film, "Wolf Totem," which opens Friday. "It was very strange," recalled the French filmmaker, who worked with bears in his 1989 film "The Bear" and tigers in his 2004 drama "Two Brothers." Annaud first met Cloudy, who was the alpha wolf of the pack and star of the movie, when he was one of many wolf cubs being trained by Andrew Simpson, who also works with dogs, hyenas and foxes. "When I visited the pack a year later, he immediately came to me," he said. "Everybody believed it was because I was the two-legged boss of my own pack."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

My wife and I have chosen to live our lives strictly as though it were the year 2012, and we face near constant mocking of our uncompromising lifestyle. The looks I get when people see me using my iPhone 5 are deeply hurtful. I can see the judgment in their eyes. They look at my slightly unfashionable clothes and see a freak. The mermaid in particular as a character, represents a unique bridge between the human and ocean world. Hannah is hoping to inspire a connection back to nature, and offer a voice to communicate the environmental issues that face us in regards to ocean health. “The ocean is our life blood. If we mess it up with pollution, overfishing, and killing these incredible species that hold the knowledge and the wisdom of the ocean, it’s only a matter of years before the rest of civilization crumbles. Presidential Race in Taiwan Reflects Women’s Rise in Politics - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The people of Taiwan appear poised to elect their first female president. Two of the three leading candidates in the January election, including the nominees of both major parties, are women. Women have led other Asian nations, but they have largely followed in the footsteps of male relatives. Not in this case. Rather, analysts say, the race reflects the fact that Taiwan does a better job of putting women into political office than just about anywhere else in the world. The island “amazed me when I first started looking at it,” said Joyce Gelb, a professor emeritus at the City University of New York who researches women in politics. “It’s second only to the Scandinavian countries, which are the bellwethers of women’s representation. I think it’s very impressive.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Student’s ‘chibi’ portraits cheer the elderly, win award - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"High-school student Huang Pei-yi (黃姵諭) received a volunteer service prize for her proposal to cheer end-of-care patients with chibi-style portraits, officials at Chiayi County’s Sieh Chich Vocational High School said on Wednesday. Chibi refers to a style of Japanese manga caricature in which features such as the head and the eyes are exaggerated for comedic effect and cuteness. Officials at Sieh Chich said Huang, a third-year student in its senior high school, took first prize from Jiuhuangshan Dizan Temple’s (九環山地藏庵) Award for Service of Others in the senior-high school division of the award. She is to receive NT$80,000, half of which will provide the operating budget for her project to draw chibi-style portraits to cheer end-of-care patients in hospices and other disadvantaged groups, school officials said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
