City543 » Following Amazon’s Footsteps, Taiwan’s Books.com.tw Opens Physical Bookstore (http://city543.com/taipei... http://static.city543.com... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Situated by the 7-Eleven by National Taiwan University’s dormitory area, Books’ new store, however, does the exact opposite of what Amazon has done with its first new physical bookstore. Instead of buying physical books that are in sync with the e-commerce site’s massive online catalog, the store, a collaborative effort between Books and 7-Eleven, only offers previews of books; the actual purchasing still has to be done online through its website." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Books.com.tw has termed its new store The Future Bookstore (未來書店), and true to the name, Books presents two new features that would more likely appear in a sci-fi movie than a bookstore. The first is the Smart Shop Assistant, which is a screen with a webcam that will first scan the customer and determine his or her demographic data through face-recognition technology. Then based on the demographic result, the assistant will present a selection of books that the customer may like. If the suggestion hits the mark, customers can add it to their “like” list and later purchase the books online through customised QR codes on their app. The second feature is the iNTERPLAY technology, which projects images onto a desk that visitors can then interact with and receive tailored suggestions for books after a brief questionnaire. Again, purchasing will still have to be done through scanning QR Codes." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: Monologue: As Your Governor, I Will Protect You From Mass Shooters If They Are Syrian. (http://www.mcsweeneys.net... )

"No Syrians will be able to just walk into a sporting goods store and purchase a deadly weapon on a whim or buy bulletproof body armor online. No Syrians will be allowed to attend gun shows and purchase whatever firearms they desire without restriction. And I refuse to support special interest groups whose sole mission is to profit from putting weapons into the hands of people, if those people are Syrians. Were there such an organization devoted to equipping Syrians with as many guns as they can afford, I would not bow to that organization’s every wish, because I am a public official, and I care very deeply about the safety of our citizens when it comes to whether they might be shot and killed by Syrians." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

A study forced people to quit Facebook to see if it made them happier - Quartz (http://qz.com/546799/a-st... https://qzprod.files.word... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Researchers from the ridiculous-sounding Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen recruited 1,095 daily Facebook users to look at the impact of the social network on happiness. They first looked at everyone’s usual Facebook behavior and found 94% visited Facebook as part of a daily routine. They split the participants into two groups; one was allowed to access Facebook and use it as normal, while the other group was forced to quit cold turkey. After a single week, the group forced to quit Facebook reported feeling more satisfied with their life. Researchers found that 88% of those who were forced to give up Facebook felt “happy,” compared with 81% of those who were still on the site." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"That said, the results are based on self-reported answers; while researchers found a link between happiness and quitting Facebook, it’s not a causal relationship. Researchers hope to further investigate whether the positive feeling participants felt after quitting Facebook could last more than a week." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Postal workers choose treats to tame dogs - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"Chunghwa Post Co has offered some of its postal workers tennis rackets and dog treats in a bid to stave off dog attacks, with trials in the Neihu (內湖), Muzha (木柵) and Beitou (北投) districts of Taipei over the past six months indicating that the treats are the best solution. There have been 2,045 dog attacks on postal workers over the past four years, with deliveries in remote areas proving the most hazardous, the company said. The company said that it bought 300 tennis rackets for postal workers to use against aggressive dogs, but many postal workers were reluctant to carry the extra weight and also felt that it looked inappropriate to members of the public." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Your new boyfriend seemed perfect when you met him in that dimly lit Indie-club in Williamsburg. He was tall, dark, handsome, drinking neat Scotch and staring out the window, buried in what you could only assume were poetic thoughts about how he couldn’t risk staying in one town too long for fear of getting too close to anyone. You knew right away that you were the only one who could break through his armor, and save him from his vague, sexy, troubled past. But now, you’ve been dating a couple weeks, and it turns out he’s not just normal, he’s SUPER well-adjusted. Not even a word about how he can “never get close to you”—just a lot of bullshit about why he thinks Citibikes are great. You wanted a Bruce Wayne, but you got one of those dudes from New Girl. You’re losing interest fast and something needs to be done about this guy who is not as busted as you thought. Here are some things to try:" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Tainan animal welfare group unveils its mascot - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Chiaohu (巧虎), a four-year-old dog that is to appear on the animal welfare group’s merchandise, is a rescued dog with a distinctive tiger-stripe coat and a clipped right ear, which marks him as having been neutered in Tainan’s no-kill animal control program that the group is promoting. Chiaohu, which in Mandarin means “clever tiger,” was rescued from a gutter in a litter of three puppies by the group’s volunteers, the association said. Chiaohu’s mother likely abandoned him and his siblings because she was spooked by Lunar New Year firecrackers, they said. The dog, originally named Hsiaohu (小虎), “little Tiger,” was much bigger than his siblings and demonstrated a knack for learning tricks, having learned to sit down, shake hands and lay prone on command within 10 minutes of instruction, the volunteers said. During this time, the volunteers began to call him Chiaohu, the association said. However, Chiaohu’s strange coat was apparently not popular with prospective adoptive families and after being returned to the shelter multiple times, the association adopted Chiaohu to be its mascot and lucky charm." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Experimental Archaeology: Archaeologists Are Building Guédelon Castle in France Using Only 13th-Century Techniques (http://www.slate.com/blog... http://www.slate.com/cont... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The Guédelon project was started in 1997 at this location, which was chosen because it was near an abandoned stone quarry, a pond for water, and in a forest that could provide wood. The whole exercise is an experimental archaeology endeavor that seeks to discover what it would have been like to create a castle centuries ago, not by making guesses from artifacts from the past, but by experiencing it in real time. Knotted rope is used to make measurements, stone is imperfectly cut to denote the station of the castle's owner, and rock is chiseled by hand." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Amazon Will Never, Ever, Replace Libraries | Motherboard (http://motherboard.vice.c... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"But the difference between the two institutions should be obvious. The goal of a public library is to lend books to citizens free of charge, and to provide spaces that serve all people in society equally. The goal of a bookstore—and Amazon Books is indisputably a bookstore—is to sell books to customers at a profit, and to provide spaces for those who are able and willing to purchase its products. Those are two different kinds of institutions and they inevitably produce two different kinds of communities. How then to account for this creeping argument? It’s worth addressing, as Amazon is increasingly drawing comparisons to libraries, especially through its Kindle Unlimited service. In 2014, Amazon rolled out that subscription service for ebooks, it was repeatedly said to be "like a library." (Except, of course, it wasn’t. Instead, it was a fee-for-service product similar to Netflix.) And last year, Forbes went so far as to argue that we should “Close the libraries and buy everyone an Amazon Kindle.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Tech evangelists and neoliberals want to have it both ways. They want to commoditize public space, but retain a strong sense of community. When citizens enter retail spaces, however, they are converted into consumers—not a bad thing, per se, and arguably necessary to keep the wheels of commerce going. But these sorts of spaces don’t bring people together; they pry them apart. The most common effect is not communion or collective feeling, as The Atlantic suggests, but atomization and anxiety. Meanwhile, a purely digital marketplace like the Kindle Lending Library, offers no public space at all—cheap, even free, books are one thing, but nobody’s going to mistake a Netflix-like download menu for a public community. Libraries, on the other hand, are different kinds of places altogether. They are built collectively through the allocation of public funds, and their mission, much like post offices or public schools, is to serve everyone equally regardless of one’s purchasing power. Though rarely sexy, slick, or technologically cutting edge, they provide something else—namely a rare and welcome respite from the relentless assaults of the market. In an increasingly venal, self-interested, and privatizedAmerican culture, libraries offer a glimpse of a more civil, humane, and social democratic impulse—the better angels of our nature." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A French village priest who smashed a statue of Jesus in his church has blamed the stress and fatigue of his job for an act which shocked his congregation. Jean-Jacques Le Roy, 55, a priest in Plestin-les-Greves in Brittany, shouted out "one less!" as he threw the statue to the ground last Thursday during a visit by a sacred art commission. Vicar-general Gerard Nicole said Le Roy did not like the style of sculpture and local media said he had previously smashed a religious statue in front of a future married couple." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The library camels of Kenya, as they are popularly known, serve the nomadic population in the country with books. A programme which was started way back in the late 80s, these book toting humps just sit around in empty spaces, allowing you to come and choose your book, read it and then keep it back in the book trunk. Now that's something everyone should experience!. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"LIBRARY OF MASS DESTRUCTION Don't go by the literal meaning of the name -this library in Argentina represents a dark time in the nation's history. It pulls up besides pedestrians and allows them to borrow books. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
