Seattle Sounders Alliance sets out new rules for GM retention votes - Sounder At Heart (http://www.sounderatheart... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"In February the team and the council met and agreed that the GM vote process needed to be given teeth and clarified to cover all future scenarios. The new rules establish that a vote will take place every four seasons after a new GM is hired (so the Sounders bringing in Lagerwey essentially reset the clock). At least 40 percent of Alliance Members must cast a vote in order to make the result valid, and only a supermajority of 67 percent can effectively "fire" the GM. This is a change from the 2012 vote, which had a 10,000-vote threshold for validity, and required only a simple majority for a binding decision. Alliance members' votes will continue to be weighted based on the number of season ticket seats on their account, one vote per seat, just as before. The rules also define "General Manager" to mean the individual "identified and recognized by Major League Soccer, LLC as the senior most soccer decision maker, whom is designated to represent the Club at all league wide competition related committees and meetings." This prevents the club from messing with the titles or roles of employees such that the GM is not really the one in charge." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

I wondered how they were going to handle this. It seemed a bit unfair that the current system would stand, if the clock just simply reset every time a new GM was hired. You hope that the GM is in for the long-term, but if you had a quick succession of people, that might be just as bad as one person under-performing, and the fans wouldn't get a say. This way, there's a bit more of an outlet for that, and the 2-year mark feels fair. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

I guess the one huge benefit of having Bruce Arena do halftime analysis is that nobody is going to interrupt him. (And, really, that was a fairly decent coach's perspective on the half.) Wynalda looked like he was trying to eat a lemon backwards not saying anything.

Steven Gerrard returns to Liverpool: LA Galaxy life not been bed of roses for former Anfield captain | Premier League | Sport | The Independent (http://www.independent.co... ) [http://static.independent... ]

"Gerrard later admitted in a revealing interview with Galaxy’s official website that he had underestimated the challenges posed by MLS. “It could be my last season as a footballer. I certainly don’t want to feel like I’m feeling right now come next year,” he said. “Going on the road, playing on [artificial] turf, playing at altitude, playing in humidity, those are the hurdles that I’ve had to face over the last three months that I wasn’t aware of,” he continued. “Every away game has a different challenge.”" - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
Half a season and likely done. The thing is, with LA's performance in the latter half, I feel like they're the ones who got the bad end of that bargain. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Jason Kreis leaves post as New York City FC Head Coach | New York City FC (http://www.nycfc.com/post... )

"New York City Football Club can confirm that they have parted company with Head Coach Jason Kreis. The announcement comes following a review conducted at the end of a disappointing campaign.  The decision has also been made for Miles Joseph and CJ Brown to leave the Club. Prior to the start of the season, it was agreed with the coaching team that the securing of a playoff place was an appropriate target for this year. A win rate of less than one in three games and a points tally which was the second lowest in the league is clearly not in line with the targets that were agreed.  While the challenges of building and integrating a new team are recognized, it was felt by the Board, following a comprehensive review, that there was not enough evidence of the dynamics required to improve the performance of the team for the next season and beyond." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Exactly. Chicago and Seattle are the only two that I can think of, and most expansion teams have a really funky first season (even when their best talent is there at the beginning of the year.) And really, Seattle scraped in that first year. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

I love that the FOX sports folks are complaining about the football lines on the turf in the Sounders match. The one that was rescheduled by FOX to be one, rather than two, days before an NFL game. Yeah, it's insulting, but they're literally part of the problem, and until their own network (and others) start taking that stuff into consideration, it'll keep happening. There are fewer places where it's likely now, but some of those are not going to change any time in the near future.

If anything, we're gaining some, with places like Atlanta. They're going to have the exact same problem, and same pressure to just roll with whatever the TV contract demands. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

At least for CLink, it is a combination - the field takes at least 12 hours to complete the drying process (when it isn't pouring) so it needed to be finished painting by Sunday afternoon to be done for Monday night's activities. If the paint is wet, it is a problem for traction. Now, the Seahawks could go with the slimline sidelines which aren't as jarring, take less time to dry, and would look a lot better during the soccer match, but they give no fucks about that. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

I can honestly say I haven't seen a game quite as crazy as the Sounders/CD Olimpia match tonight. Certainly not one with as many people diving so they could be stretchered off, or people literally kicking a player after a successful penalty conversion. Special shout out to the player for Olimpia who faked an injury to be stretchered off as a sub at the end of the match to waste time, and while he was mocking the crowd, had the Sounders score the tying goal.

Union to launch their own USL team in Bethlehem (http://www.philly.com/phi... )

"The Union are set to take a major step in growing their player development structure by launching their own team in the lower-division United Soccer League. Next Wednesday, Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz will join Lehigh University president John Simon and USL CEO Alec Papadakis to make the official announcement at Lehigh’s Goodman Stadium, which is where the team is expected to play. Sakiewicz and his Union colleagues have wanted for a while to launch a USL team that the MLS club owns and operates. In recent years, they have partnered with the Harrisburg City Islanders. That relationship has been fruitful, but limited compared to what MLS clubs have done with USL teams that they own and operate." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

I loved seeing all of the traveling fans for Orlando at the game today. It is such a long trip for most of them, and I know that even with the result, it was still probably worth it -- because I know that if most of the fans I know traveled to see their teams, it would be worth it for them. Our various cities are SO far apart in the MLS, but people still manage to bring their love and enthusiasm across all of the miles.

"There's no cheese in this "paneer" recipe, but there are perfectly seasoned, super crispy, cheesy-flavored blocks of tofu. Take some time to press and marinate the tofu in advance—the resulting texture is absolutely worthwhile. "It's not always easy to be a Philadelphia Union fan. Some would even say that the Union front office doesn't deserve to have a team with such diehard supporters. It's also why they talk about building through youth while they're shipping their young players off to other teams. :-P At least the players seem to respond well to Curtin so maybe if they give him (and the current front office) a bit more time, the team will improve a bit. - John B. - - (Edit | Remove)

Thorns FC announce first sellout in team history for Wednesday's match against Seattle Reign FC | Portland Timbers (http://www.timbers.com/po... )

Portland Thorns FC announced today that the team’s home match against Seattle Reign FC on Wednesday, July 22, at Providence Park is sold out. With a crowd of 21,144, the club will break its own National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) attendance record of 19,123 fans set on Aug. 3, 2014, against the Houston Dash. Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first three NWSL seasons, drawing crowds of better than 16,000 four times since 2013. In addition, a sold-out crowd Wednesday will rank as the second-largest, stand-alone crowd in the history of women’s professional soccer in the United States. It ranks second only behind the inaugural match of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) between the Bay Area CyberRays and Washington Freedom on April 14, 2001, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

The MLS disciplinary committee handed down fines and a suspension to members of the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday. The disciplinary committee suspended Whitecaps midfielder Cristian Techera and fined him an undisclosed amount for violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent in the 93rd minute of Vancouver's match against the Portland Timbers on July 18. Techera's hard tackle on Portland's Diego Chara led to a post-game scuffle between the two teams. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

FIFA 16 box to feature stars of American, Canadian Women’s National Teams | Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/ga... )

Of all the features coming to this September's FIFA 16 soccer game, the most visually apparent one is a giant roster update that includes female players—in the form of ten major national women's soccer teams with accurately rendered players. This development, and the United States' stellar performance in this summer's FIFA Women's World Cup, led to a vocal movement. Suddenly, a thousands-strong petition called for something that's never before appeared on the cover of an annual EA Sports franchise: a woman as the cover star. On Monday, EA Sports responded to Ars' questions about the cover with confirmation of multiple women as FIFA 16 cover stars. In particular, the company identified the women who will co-star with FC Barcelona star player Lionel Messi on North American versions of the game. The American box for FIFA 16 will include US Women's National Team forward Alex Morgan, while the Canadian box will feature their team captain Christine Sinclair. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
As they mention, if they hadn't been vetting possibilities well in advance of the World Cup final, there's a good chance that'd be Carli Lloyd instead. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
