The etymology of the word ‘monk’ lies in the Greek monachos, meaning single or solitary. The root of the word monastery is the Greek monastirion, which was used initially for the cell of a hermit. This is clear indication that the origin of the monastic movement was the personal seclusion rather than the communal life. But the variety of monastic life according to a common rule and within a closed community developed soon afterwards. Between 318 and 323 CE Pachomius, a former soldier in the Roman army and convert to Christianity, founded his first community at Tabennisi, in Upper Egypt. FYI: There was a group of young non-believers in classical Athens who called themselves the "Seekers of Ill Fortune." They went around blaspheming in the most shocking ways they could think of, like breaking in to temples and feasting on the offerings, and claimed that their not being struck by lightning or similar fates was evidence against the existence of these gods.

Interesting way to count the days: "Unlike the Western system of months and days, the Mesoamerican sacred calendar moves the coefficient AND the day sign in parallel. You start with 1 Crocodile, then you move ahead both the number and the day sign, going to 2 Wind on the next day. You keep going until you end up with 13 Reed, then you rewind the numbers but continue with the day sign, hence yielding 1 Jaguar.
