Nivea Created a Doll That Gets Sunburned to Teach Kids About the Importance of Sunscreen | Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adf... http://www.adweek.com/fil... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Nivea and FCB Brazil, last year's Gravity winners in Adweek's Project Isaac awards competition, have come up with one solution for educating kids about the sun in a language they're sure to understand: toys. The Nivea Doll is made with UV-sensitive material and quickly turns lobster-red when exposed to harsh rays without sunscreen, just like your own skin eventually would if left unprotected. If the child uses sunscreen on the doll, it will be protected from sunburn. If the doll's already red, putting a dollop of Nivea on it will turn the skin back to its normal shade (not a perfect comparison to a real sunburn, which is far harder to undo, but it's an effective illustration for kids). "Protecting and caring is something we learn from an early age. This emotional bond is what this Nivea action offers," Joanna Monteiro, creative vp at FCB Brazil, said in a statement. "Through the magic of technology, children can see the sun's effect on the skin of the doll."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Kansas City, Missouri, lawyer Jeffrey Tonkin found an involuntary intruder in his law office on Monday. Legal secretary Monica Hastings was the first to spot the intruder -- a turkey that may have been propelled through Tonkin's window by strong winds, KCTV reports. "I opened up the door to Tonkin's office," Hastings told the broadcast station, "and I saw a little turkey tail go past his desk." The bird left a hole in Tonkin's window, and droppings and feathers in his office. The lawyer was working with plastic gloves to avoid the mess." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Light Government Touch Lets China’s Hui Practice Islam in the Open - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Asked about the Chinese government’s light touch here, Liu Jun, 37, the chief imam at the Banqiao Daotang Islamic School, offered a knowing smile. “Muslims from other parts of China who come here, especially from Xinjiang, can’t believe how free we are, and they don’t want to leave,” he said, referring to the far-west borderlands that are home to China’s beleaguered Uighur ethnic minority. “Life for the Hui is very good.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Descendants of Persian and Arab traders who settled along the Silk Road and took Chinese wives, the nation’s 10 million Hui are a minority primarily defined by their faith and, in some cases, solely their culinary habits. Compared with the Uighurs, they have also demonstrated a remarkable ability to coexist with the Communist Party, an organization hard-wired to distrust those whose first loyalty belongs to a higher power. Unlike the Uighurs, who speak a Turkic dialect and whose Eurasian features set them apart from the country’s Han Chinese majority, the Hui speak Chinese and are often indistinguishable from their non-Muslim neighbors. In much of China, the white caps worn by men and the head scarves worn by women are all that give them away. In many places, the Hui have so thoroughly assimilated that their only connection to Islam is a vestigial aversion to pork. Most subscribe to a moderate brand of Islam, though tradition frowns upon intermarriage — Hui men who break convention by marrying outside the faith often demand that their wives convert to Islam." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Our Incorruptible Dead Girls - The Awl (http://www.theawl.com/201... http://cdn2.theawl.com/wp... )

"[W]hen the Paris morgue was moved and rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century, it was designed to make looking at bodies easy, almost pleasurable. Bodies were displayed behind large glass windows, lined up one by one, displayed like an object to be consumed. Parisians could visit the dead girls, worship seven days a week, anytime from sunrise to sundown. Behind the glass windows the of Paris morgue, the dead girls were displayed like the incorruptible bodies of saints. Enshrined, objects that could identify them were hung next to their bodies; clothes and jewelry laid next to the bodies like relics. Prints from the era show a familiar scene: Long hair falling over breasts, violent wounds hidden, faces peaceful enough that they could be sleeping. And like the dead girls of procedural dramas, their bodies never fester—removed before the rot of death set in. At the Paris morgue, the romance of spectacle was preserved. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"If the stilted language and look of science cloaks longing, then the dead girl’s inability to speak is a fantasy in and of itself. The dead girl’s body is the only fundamental source of truth. It carries on it clues about her murder, so her entire body must be gleaned. Flakes, dirt from under her nails, microscopic evidence is all gathered placed into envelopes and jars. Labelled and preserved, these objects of veneration tell us something that victim is herself unable to mutter." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A wolf pack: the first 3 are the old or sick, they give the pace to the entire pack. If it was the other way round, they would be left behind, losing contact with the pack. In case of an ambush they would be sacrificed. Then come 5 strong ones, the front line. In the center are the rest of the pack members, then the 5 strongest following. Last is alone, the alpha. He controls everything from the rear. In that position he can see everything, decide the direction. He sees all of the pack. The pack moves according to the elders pace and help each other, watch each other." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Like most Manhattan apartments, the Astolat Dollhouse has seven levels, stairways, hallways, a basement, a wine cellar a kitchen and an armoury. There are formal rooms, a library, a music room, a grand ballroom and a bar (with real tiny bottles of liquor), and that’s before you get to the Wizard’s tower on the top level. Astolat's inventory of items numbers about 30,000, but less than a third are displayed at any one time within the structure. The rest remains in storage until the owners - who wish to remain anonymous - decide to "redecorate." These collectors’ items include a silver flatware set, said to be worth $5,000, a drop-leaf secretary bookshelf valued at up to $2,500 or a miniature Hebrew Torah worth up to $2,500 among many others." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"For low-income students, math is often an impenetrable barrier to academic success. Algebra II, which includes polynomials and logarithms, and is required by the new Common Core curriculum standards used by 47 states and territories, drives dropouts at both the high school and college levels. The situation is most dire at public colleges, which are the most likely to require abstract algebra as a precondition for a degree in every field, including art and theater. “We are really destroying a tremendous amount of talent—people who could be talented in sports writing or being an emergency medical technician, but can’t even get a community college degree,” Hacker told me in an interview. “I regard this math requirement as highly irrational.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Having established a name in All-Star, Rebel is now making a run at Varsity's traditional sideline business, where schools present a very different customer universe. Here, too, Varsity dominates thanks to longstanding relationships with school coaches. "They grew up in the Varsity system," says Noseff Aldridge. "All they know is to buy Varsity." It's another chance for Rebel to play the "challenger brand": an upstart using unexpected tactics to tackle an entrenched player. Mark Barden, a partner in the consulting firm Eatbigfish, which coined the term, says Rebel is among the purest examples of a challenger brand he has seen. Noseff Aldridge "is incensed by the way Varsity works and wants to fix it," he says. A New Face for Team USA: Fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad (http://time.com/fencer/ https://timedotcom.files.... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Less than a week after Obama’s shout-out, Muhammad sits unnoticed at a Manhattan Starbucks, talking about something that scares her far more than a sword darting toward her face. “If Donald Trump had his way, America would be white,” Muhammad says between sips of a skinny hazelnut latte. “And there wouldn’t be any color. And there wouldn’t be any diversity here.” This is charged turf for an Olympian. These athletes, the bulk of whom attract attention only once every four years, tend to shy away from politics. Even a whiff of controversy has the potential to turn off potential fans and alienate the corporate sponsors that help subsidize their dreams. But Trump’s rise to the front of the Republican presidential pack, along with his call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S., is more than Muhammad can abide. “When you incite hateful speech and rhetoric like that, the people who say it never think about the repercussions and how that affects Muslims,” says Muhammad. “Specifically Muslim women who wear their religion every single day. So then you start to think, Am I going to be safe?”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Voters can pick 'none of the above' thanks to this Whitby-Oshawa byelection candidate - Toronto - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/ca... )

"Ever wish you could choose "None of the Above" in an election? Voters in the provincial riding of Whitby-Oshawa will soon see that option at the bottom of their ballot in the upcoming byelection. A 46-year-old man from Thornhill, Ont., formerly known as Sheldon Bergson, spent $137 to legally change his name to Above Znoneofthe, got 25 voters to sign his nomination papers and registered with Elections Ontario to run in the Feb. 11 byelection. Since the candidate names appear on the ballot in alphabetical order, his will be 10th of the 10 candidates. But there's one small hitch in his plan. On provincial election ballots, candidates' names are printed with first name then last name. So instead of appearing as "Znoneofthe Above" his will read "Above Znoneofthe." Sci-Hub: Russian neuroscientist running 'Pirate Bay for scientists' with 48 million free academic papers (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/... https://d.ibtimes.co.uk/e... )

"Sci-Hub, a website dubbed the "Pirate Bay for scientists" by offering peer-reviewed academic papers to download for free, is thumbing its nose at copyright holders following an infringement lawsuit battle in the US. Sci-Hub is the brainchild of Alexandra Elbakyan, a neuroscientist from Kazakhstan who is now based in Russia. When she was writing her thesis in 2009, Elbakyan found it difficult to access the research she needed to complete her work, as she needed to download many papers, and each paper retailed for up to $30 (£21) each. To get through her thesis, Elbakyan was forced to download pirated versions of the academic papers for free, and eventually, after being introduced to a website that enabled researchers to share and trade the academic papers they needed with people who had paid for them, she decided to take the idea further and create her own website around 2011 or 2012." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Record number of rare birds spotted - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The nation saw a record number of black-faced spoonbills wintering across major wetlands this year, suggesting successful conservation efforts and a potential for repopulation of the endangered species. Bird lovers spotted a total of 2,060 black-faced spoonbills last month, a slight increase from the 2,034 recorded in the same month last year, the Forestry Bureau said yesterday. It was also the second year in a row that more than 2,000 of the rare species spent their winter here, the bureau said. A survey in November last year counted 2,300 black-faced spoonbills, but the number could be an overestimation due to double counting, as the birds were still migrating, it said. “The number of black-faced spoonbills in the world dropped below 300 in 1990, and the bird was placed on the [International Union for Conservation of Nature’s] red list of critically endangered species. That was when Taiwan began its conservation efforts, and those efforts have paid off. We are glad to see our ‘star species’ repopulate,” bureau Deputy Director-General Yang Hung-chih (楊宏志) said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Stop dismissing small talk as shallow or boring. It’s a crucial social lubricant! (http://www.slate.com/arti... http://www.slate.com/cont... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Small talk is fun precisely for the reasons Boomer thinks it’s boring: It requires playing within the lines. Using sports, weather, family, and other unremarkable raw material, the skilled conversationalist spins it into gold—or at least cotton candy. In a way, making small talk is like writing a sonnet. It’s the restrictions of the form that make the best examples of it beautiful. Perhaps the reason so many people find it tedious is simply that they’re bad at it. Chatting about work and education, not to mention trivialities like bus routes and rain, can tell us quite a lot about “who the person really is,” as Boomer puts it. Not because it’s a snobby shorthand for sorting a person by her pedigree, but because it lets you evaluate how she talks about her experiences, how she tells the story of herself, and how she approaches trifles like bad weather. Is she whiny? Wry? Cheery? It’s all informative, and none of it requires badgering anyone to reveal the moment of their most soul-shattering humiliation over cocktails. Ice-breakers like “Tell me about your weightiest belief” ask that your interlocutor dredge the depths of her soul on demand; small talk lets self-revelation unspool with a more civilized subtlety." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
