Space is hard. There’s a reason we use rocket science as a benchmark for anything extremely difficult. I for one champion all things space and eagerly await every single upcoming space event. But, in order to move forward, we’d better look back at some past failures and see what we’ve learned from them. What better way to do that than to watch some of the biggest boom’s in spaceflight history? SpaceX is targeting launch of Iridium-6/GRACE-FO on Tuesday, May 22 from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The instantaneous launch opportunity is at 12:47 p.m. PDT, or 19:47 UTC. The GRACE-FO satellites will be deployed approximately eleven minutes and thirty seconds after launch, followed by the deployment of five Iridium® NEXT satellites beginning about an hour after launch. A backup instantaneous launch opportunity is available on Wednesday, May 23 at 12:42 p.m. PDT, or 19:42 UTC. Falcon 9’s first stage for the Iridium-6/GRACE-FO mission previously supported the Zuma mission from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in January 2018. In foto due primi stadi rientrati dallo spazio: a sinistra un F9 Block IV e a destra un Block V. Da quest'immagine si può capire quali sono alcuni dei miglioramenti che rendono il block V facilmente riutilizzabile mentre la precedente versione aveva bisogno di massicce ricostruzione. Un esempio lampante sono le grid fins, le pinne direzionali che servono a guidare il razzo nel rientro in atmosfera...

Nella versione precedente erano in alluminio e come potete facilmente vedere con l'intenso calore del rientro si fondevano e andavano nella quasi totalità dei casi smontate sostituite. L'alluminio fuso andava ad intaccare il metallo sovrastante che ovviamente doveva essere controllato e verificato contro possibili indebolimenti. Nella versione definitiva, il block V, le pinnette sono di titanio, non si fondono alle temperature del rientro, in più tutta la zona, comprese le tubazioni esterne e la zona intorno ai motori sono state ricoperte da una sostanza resistente al calore. Questo fa sì che non vi sia necessità di riparazioni o sostituzioni. Questa è stata la filosofia, tanti piccoli ritocchi che però dovrebbero migliorare drasticamente i tempi di riutilizzo. - Invernomuto - [ 6 ] -

Intanto MarCo A e B si sono correttamente attivati e in settimana cominceranno a manovrare. Si parte in una finestra compresa fra le 22:12 e 00:22 di stasera. Lancio verso l'orbita geostazionaria di un satellite tv+dati con recupero del primo stadio. La novità è il Block V ovvero il primo lancio dell'ultima versione del F9. Maggior potenza e tutta una serie (mai dettagliata) di migliorie volte a incrementare la riusabilità.
