LA Galaxy say Steven Gerrard could have similar (on-field) impact as David Beckham | MLSsoccer.com http://www.mlssoccer.com/... (http://www.mlssoccer.com/... )

“I think we're going to be a better team,” Gordon said. “Actually, I know we're going to be a better team. He brings a lot of qualities that we didn't have, that you only get with a guy like that. So we're inheriting a legend, one of the top people in the game in a lot of aspects.” Could Gerrard have the same type of impact as Beckham did? Off the field, perhaps not – Beckham brought significant new attention to MLS that would be hard to replicate – but on the field, why not? “I'm not going to change football over here,” Gerrard said, “but if I could just contribute and add a little bit to it, I will be very proud.” - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)

The last thought about this Women's World Cup that I've had throughout - I am so glad that so many of the players have a robust league in the US and Canada to return to. After the last cup, it wasn't even certain that many of the players would be able to continue professionally in the US, and some of the biggest stars weren't even being properly paid. It is so different this time around.

Some players had much better chances overseas in leagues which were more stable four years ago, but now - the WSL has a very bright future. They're saying that tickets sales are up for most teams, and they've just finally signed the TV contract which will make it easier for people to tune in if they don't live nearby. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Clint Dempsey stripped of USMNT captaincy - Sounder At Heart https://cdn2.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )

It was just two weeks ago when Clint Dempsey tore a referee's notebook to shreds near the end of a losing effort in the US Open Cup. Since then the MVP candidate and star forward for Seattle Sounders FC was suspended three matches in MLS play, six games or two years of Open Cup play and now he's lost the captain's armband with the United States, per Fox Sports. The new captain of the USA is Michael Bradley. That should not be a surprise -- Bradley is a leader, a coach's son and young enough to be a likely starter at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)
Honestly, I'm glad. I think he makes for a terrible captain (which is why he isn't one for the Sounders) even without his antics. Bradley is much more of an organizer, and feels like a far more stable locker room presence. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

When It Comes to Names, Even M.L.S. Rivals Can Be United - The New York Times http://static01.nyt.com/i... (http://www.nytimes.com/20... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Two decades ago, Kevin Payne pondered what to call the Washington team that he would lead as one of the 10 founding teams in Major League Soccer. Sitting in the lunchroom of his soccer promotions company, he and members of his staff tossed out names. One employee sarcastically intoned, “Why don’t you call it United, like every other soccer team?” “D.C. United,” Payne said. The other faces in the room lit up. Today, the naming process is far more extensive for M.L.S. expansion clubs. Atlanta, the next team that will enter the league, in 2017, spent months on market research, surveys, focus groups and brand audits — all to end up in practically the same place: Atlanta United. The team even added an F.C. at the end of its name, for a double dose of European flavor." - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)

Yes, I noticed they very much stepped around that one (especially since that is so very American, in a bad and stupid sort of way.) It just seemed like a massive cheat to leave out a bunch of team names with interesting stories. The write-in vote winning for the Sounders. The tie in to Bethlehem Steel for the Union. The absolute lack of any question whether the Timbers would keep that name. The Chivas USA disaster. The Impact carrying through. They even give short shrift to the Earthquakes and the Fire, with the history of the city/region tied into the name. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Clint Dempsey suspended three games - Sounder At Heart https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Clint Dempsey has been suspended for three matches and fined an undisclosed amount of money after he was red carded for tearing up the referee's logbook and then stormed off the pitch in Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup game against the Portland Timbers. "We do not tolerate conduct of this nature from any of our players," MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott said in a statement. "No matter how passionate our players are or what happens in the ‘heat of the moment,' they must always respect all aspects of the game, especially the referees. In light of Clint's actions and our past precedents, we felt that a significant suspension was appropriate." Although MLS has never taken this stern of action for events that occurred in a match outside of a league competition, it is less severe than the U.S. Soccer handbook suggested was at least possible. At one point, it had been suggested that MLS could be forced to suspend Dempsey as long as six months. But even a more nuanced reading of the rules suggested MLS may have to suspend Dempsey for as many as six games." - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)

Clint Dempsey could see long suspension for ‘assault’ on referee - Sounder At Heart https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
According to the rules listed above, what Dempsey did was an act of assault on the referee. In the video posted above you can see Dempsey go to back of referee Daniel Radford, grab something out from a pocket, and throw it to the ground. That act earned him his first yellow. The picking up and ripping of that object, which is believed to be the referee's log book, earned him his second yellow and his ejection. But unless the referee handed the book to US Captain, which seems unlikely, then Dempsey took it from the referee and then tore it up. This act violates that part that says "damaging the referee's uniform or personal property" part of that rule there. Based on this, USSF could come down hard on Dempsey, with at least a three month suspension. Keep in mind, this is a US Soccer suspension which normally would not carry over to MLS, who would have to suspend the forward separately according to their own rules. Instead the suspension by USSF would limit Dempsey's ability to play in US Open Cup games or International competitions including the upcoming Gold Cup. The repercussions of this incident have the potential for pretty damning ramifications for Clint Dempsey, the Seattle Sounders, and the United States Men's National Team. - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)

I was watching the live stream (my head bobbing between the computer screen and the Warriors game on TV). The officiating wasn't great but I have seen much worse. I watched Dempsey lose his s*** and was just.....WHAT? I mean, WHAT? It's a shame that a few moments of no discipline and he turned himself into a punchline. And hurt the game, because it's a shame if the US loses his services and if the MLS has to respond with any disciplinary action of its own. But seeing the Sounders unravel in the overtime was just surreal. - vicster - - (Edit | Remove)

I love seeing so many players from WSL teams out there at the Women's World Cup. Part of what was bittersweet about the last tournament was knowing that a lot of the players were coming back to a league which wasn't all that stable, and where some were in very bad situations with owners that weren't paying them, or extorting favors in return for health care coverage. The WSL seems like such a better deal for them on so many levels.

Many would have said it was over. But after going down 3-1 in the second half, the US national team walked away from Amsterdam Arena with a 4-3 win. In their first ever win against the Netherlands, the US score three players score their first international goals including Bobby Wood, who provided the winner in the 90th minute. In what was a wide-open game between the two sides that saw each team put 11 shots on target, Jurgen Klinsmann's side got their second straight win heading into their matchup with Germany on Wednesday (2:45 pm ET, FOX Sports 1/UniMás/UDN). - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)

MLS Disciplinary Committee suspends Seattle Sounders' Osvaldo Alonso and DC United's Chris Rolfe | MLSsoccer.com https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.mlssoccer.com/... )
9 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
A pair of MLS regulars will be missing their upcoming matches after sanctions were handed down by the MLS Disciplinary Committee. D.C. United forward Chris Rolfe was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount "for violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent" against the Philadelphia Union last Saturday. In the 62nd minute Rolfe is seen kicking out at Philadelphia's Vincent Nogueira after the Frenchman committed a foul. Rolfe will miss Wednesday's match against his former club, the Chicago Fire (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE).   Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso was also suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount "for violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent." In the 83rd minute against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, Alonso was called for a foul after delivering a late kick to Red Bulls midfielder Felipe Martins, but he was not issued a card by the match referee. Alonso will not be available for Seattle when the Sounders visit Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night (8:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE). - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)
Feels appropriate. I think most of the crowd was surprised that Alonso didn't at least get a yellow at that point. The official ran hot and cold. At times, he seemed to be running a tight ship, and then he'd lose the narrative of the game for about 5 minutes and things would go nuts. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"Former CONCACAF president Jack Warner was arrested on Wedenesday, as well as Jeffrey Webb, who took over as president following Warner's ousting for corruption. Several other officials in CONCACAF were named as well, calling into question how the confederation could put together a tournament this summer. That apparently will not be a problem. Next summer's Copa America is a whole other problem. The tournament, normally contested by just South American teams, was to be played in the U.S. with North American, Central American and Caribbean teams, making it a super tournament for the championship of all the Americans. It was also supposed to be a cash cow. But the indictments alleged serious corruption related to the tournament and put it in doubt. Unlike the Gold Cup, Copa America 2016 is not imminent. They don't have stadiums lined up yet or even a TV deal. That is all to be worked out so they would have little to unravel if they called it off and they would have a lot to put together in a short span if the indictments put a hold on planning for the competition." - Jennifer D. from Bookmarklet - - (Edit | Remove)

I know fan groups can be ALL TEH DRAMAZ sometimes, but I'm just over the Emerald City Supporters this year. I kinda don't care what sort of MLS and front-office driven shenanigans lead to an ECS guy flipping off a camera on live TV at Vancouver, or why they were all aggro about people photographing the march to the match on Sunday. Yes, the MLS keeping overreaching. They were expressly told that, no, they did not have permission to take away seats in the travelling supporters section to film for a promotional Cascadia Rivalry video, but they did it anyway - and then aired some of that footage live. (Hence, middle finger guy, who is now banned from CLink.) The thing is, the best way to deal with that? Turn your back on the camera. It gives them no footage. It's a pain, but they can't make you cheer. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Randomize U.S. Open Cup draw and 'dare to make it meaningful', Sigi Schmid urges - Sounder At Heart https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"There is no shortage of ideas on how to "fix" the U.S. Open Cup, and around this time every year Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid shares his. It's genius in its simplicity: Stop regionalizing it and institute a blind draw, effectively mimicking the far more popular FA Cup. Even if Schmid weren't the tournament's most successful coach -- he has won it five times and coached seven finalists -- his thinking is worth hearing out: "The only thing that's sad for me is one of the great things about the FA Cup and some of the cups even in other countries is you can end up with a derby as the final game. You can have a Manchester City play Manchester United as a final game, you can have an Arsenal play against Tottenham as a final game. Because of the regionalization of the draw in U.S. Soccer, you will never have a Portland-Seattle final. You will never have a New York City-Red Bull final. You will never have a Dallas-Houston final. And I think that's a little sad. It's disappointing."" - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

Galaxy effectively blocked Sounders from signing Timo Hildebrand - Sounder At Heart https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/... (http://www.sounderatheart... )
10 years ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The Sounders had their sights set on goalkeeper Timo Hildenbrand, who had trained with the Sounders and was offered a contract. According to multiple sources, the Galaxy put in a discovery claim for Hildebrand after the goalkeeper had practiced with Seattle, getting wind of the training stint and moving to get in the way of Seattle's signing. Hildenbrand asked Seattle not to put in a discovery claim on him before the two sides agreed to a contract, which gave the Galaxy enough time to step in and submit their claim. When asked about the Hildenbrand case, Arena denied that the Galaxy put in the claim to squeeze a fee out of Seattle. According to one Sounders source, the Galaxy never set a price for getting out of Seattle's way, but by staying in the way they forced Seattle to give up its move for Hildenbrand. "Hildenbrand was on our discovery list and they brought him on trial and offered him a contract," Arena said. "We said he's on our discovery list. Technically you can't do that." All of this comes at the same time that Arena is complaining about how the current Discovery process works, one in which the Galaxy were forced to send the New England Revolution a relatively paltry sum of $50,000 in allocation money and had to wait a couple months before signing United States youth international Sebastian Lletget. If the current system were in place last year, the Galaxy would have either had to sign Hildebrand or accept the $50,000 in allocation." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"In an interesting interview with Orange County Blues play-by-play announcer Marc Serber on the USLRadio podcast that was released on Thursday, came the fascinating tidbit from Serber that Chivas USA wanted an affiliate agreement with the Blues, which the latter club rebuffed (that point comes at right around the 12:00 mark). Serber doesn't specify which year this was (or if it was both years), or any further details about it, but that's pretty striking, considering both teams had some real turmoil the last couple years and still CUSA was evidently denied in the seemingly-logical quest to make the Blues their USL PRO affiliate. Of course, in the long run, it's a moot point, since Chivas USA no longer exist and no one can deny there was remarkable turmoil and disfunction with the defunct MLS side. And the Blues are in the midst of a rebuild that seems to be paying dividends so far this year, while remaining a totally independent USL team." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"According to several sources, MLS has voided his contract, presumably because he had a preexisting condition. It remains unclear who knew the severity of Johnson’s ailment and when they knew it. What is clear, sources say, is that United was not aware when the club acquired him from Seattle before the 2014 season. Sources also say the Sounders did not know of the potential medical danger when they signed him as a free agent in early 2012. Even in the best of health, Johnson was a risky proposition because of his checkered career. A known heart problem would have ended any discussion about acquiring him." - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)
The whole "pre-existing condition" thing can be so thorny. It is so damn hard to detect the sort of problem he has (so much so that it kills a number of athletes every year.) It's unlikely that he'd have continued playing if he'd known, or anyone had known.
