How spending has fallen under Obama: It’s unlikely that President Obama will ever shake his reputation among Republicans as a big spender. But a key fact counters that rap. via Pocket - Technodad - - (Edit | Remove)

parislemon: A few tweets of mine today about Microsoft releasing Office for iPad seem to have people up-in-arms. So allow me to clarify. First, I do think this is an important moment. Not for me, personally, because I still won’t use Office — haven’t in years — but for millions of other people who do and want to use it on their own terms, on their own devices. More importantly, this is important for Microsoft. It’s a grand gesture to suggest they’re finally taking their head out of the sand it has been in for the better part of a decade. "But, but, but, Microsoft clearly didn’t make Office in 52 days!," they whine. No shit. I’m not saying that Satya Nadella has been the one man hand-coding Office for iPad with both hands tied behind his back for the past 52 days. I’m saying it takes balls for Microsoft to even release Office for iPad at all. Especially now. Read More Towards a renewed relevance for Microsoft. - Technodad - - (Edit | Remove)

The Economist: No way to run a country : The Economist gives it’s usual concise overview of the US budget shutdown, and lays out some consequences if the debt ceiling issue isn’t addressed. They also assign responsibility: >  In the short term, House Republicans need to get their priorities straight. They should pass a clean budget resolution without trying to refight old battles over Obamacare. They should also vote to raise the debt ceiling (or better yet, abolish it). If Obamacare really does turn out to be a flop and Republicans win the presidency and the Senate in 2016, they can repeal it through the normal legislative process. - Technodad - - (Edit | Remove)

Newspeak: Google redefines "Open standards" as "code we own.": Google recently announced that the popular Google Hangouts service will be moving to720p HD video - overall a good thing. However, there’s an interesting statement in the middle of the announcement: "But the change isn’t just a quality upgrade – it’s part of a bigger move towards open standards… To enable HD, and prepare for this plugin-free future, Google quietly started to transition Hangouts from the H.264 video codec to VP8, an open and royalty-free video codec the company released back in 2010." This seems a bit disinformative. By pretty much any definition of an open standard, H.264 fits: It’s accepted by a de jure standards body, ISO/IEC JTC1 Governance of the standard meets some widely accepted definitions of openness, including a vendor-neutral process and FRaND licensing - H.264 is in fact royalty-free for end-user applications. On the other hand, “VP8 is a video compression format owned by Google” per Wikipedia.... - Technodad - - (Edit | Remove)
