Trial by fire! - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"Trial by ordeal is a judicial practice by which the guilt or innocence of the accused is determined by subjecting them to an unpleasant, usually dangerous experience. In some cases, the accused were considered innocent if they survived the test, or if their injuries healed; in others, only death was considered proof of innocence. (If the accused died, they were often presumed to have gone to a suitable reward or punishment in the afterlife, which was considered to make trial by ordeal entirely fair.) In medieval Europe, like trial by combat, trial by ordeal was considered a judicium Dei: a procedure based on the premise that God would help the innocent by performing a miracle on their behalf. The practice has much earlier roots, however, being attested as far back as the Code of Hammurabi and the Code of Ur-Nammu, and also in animist tribal societies, such as the trial by ingestion of "red water" (calabar bean) in Sierra Leone, where the intended effect is magical rather than invocation of a deity's justice. In pre-modern society, the ordeal typically ranked along with the oath and witness accounts as the central means by which to reach a judicial verdict." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

So today, the FMO (Fire Management Officer) told me that he hid something in my pack rat midden. I informed him that I can't even find my post-its, how was I supposed to find said object? He said, "Don't worry; just look for something shiny." FF, do you see something shiny?

Charles Bonnet syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition that causes patients with visual loss to have complex visual hallucinations, first described by Charles Bonnet in 1760[1][2] and first introduced into English-speaking psychiatry in 1982. Sufferers, who are mentally healthy people with often significant visual loss, have vivid, complex recurrent visual hallucinations (fictive visual percepts). One characteristic of these hallucinations is that they usually are "lilliput hallucinations" (hallucinations in which the characters or objects are smaller than normal). Sufferers understand that the hallucinations are not real, and the hallucinations are only visual, that is, they do not occur in any other senses, e.g.: hearing, smell or taste.[4][5] The prevalence of Charles Bonnet syndrome has been reported to be between 10% and 40%; a recent Australian study has found the prevalence to be 17.5%.[2] Two Asian studies, however, report a much lower prevalence.[6][7] The high incidence of non-reporting of this disorder is the greatest hindrance to determining the exact prevalence; non-reporting is thought to be as a result of sufferers being afraid to discuss the symptoms out of fear that they will be labelled insane.[5] People suffering from CBS may experience a wide variety of hallucinations. Images of complex colored patterns and images of people are most common, followed by animals, plants or trees and inanimate objects. The hallucinations also often fit into the person's surroundings.[" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Johnny, that video is pretty epic. Anika, it's happened at various times in my life, but I've noticed it's happened at least once a day for about the past month or so. Not anything terrifying; it's just bizarre. o_O As far as I know, my eyes have sustained no damage. - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"The mayor of Detroit is promoting a controversial new plan to “right-size” the city. He may offer cash incentives to residents to leave vacant neighborhoods. The goal is to make the city more efficient in delivering services to its citizens. But Detroit’s “rightsizing” plan is also about imagining a new city — and the imagination isn’t limited to city government. In fact, some of the great new ideas are coming from citizens who aren’t old enough to vote. This story about some of Detroit’s youngest city planners comes from Detroit Public Television." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

How Does Asparagus Make Urine Smell? | eHow.com - http://www.ehow.com/how-doe...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"If you've ever eaten asparagus, something strange may have happened about 20 minutes after eating it. Perhaps you noticed, perhaps you didn't, but chances are that tasty asparagus side dish left something behind for you. Sure, it's a rather odd token of appreciation, but that popular green veggie called asparagus is known to cause a rather strange smell in the urine of those who consume it." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
14 other comments... | Show last 10...
"Since both methyl mercaptan and asparagine are associated with the sense of smell, there is debate over which ingredient is actually responsible for the asparagus-urine phenomenon. Depending upon whom you ask, some scientists may blame it on the methyl mercaptan while others argue that asparagine is the cause for the odor. Some even think that it's the combination of both compounds. Regardless of the exact culprit, the reason why your urine smells after eating asparagus is simple: because of the way your body breaks it down." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
