Bears of the Last Frontier ~ Introduction | Nature | PBS - http://www.pbs.org/wnet...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Alaska harbors all three of North America’s bear species, from three hundred pound black bears to polar and brown bears weighing well over half a ton. It is home to the highest mountain on the continent, vast glaciers, immense forests, and a level of isolation that can be found nowhere else in the United States. And it’s big. This northernmost state is the same size as the next three largest states combined (California, Texas and Montana). Alaska’s wilderness allowed us to step back in time on a journey that took us through five major ecosystems and the habitats of its three bear species. It was also a journey that put us to the test as we hiked, camped and lived among the biggest bears in the world, chased black bears through the streets of Anchorage, followed grizzlies on the prowl for immense caribou herds, and searched for polar bears miles out on the pack ice. In every one of these locations bears have adapted impressively to their surroundings. We’re hoping that, as you wander through this website and sink yourself into the series, you will feel immersed in the world of the bear. It is a truly wondrous place." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
"It’s finally here — time for us to share our incredible Alaskan adventure with the world through Bears of the Last Frontier. It has been quite the journey. The film has been nearly two years in the making, and for both of us it has become an unforgettable part of our lives. Over the course of a year and a half we traveled well over 3000 miles across Alaska and shot 500 hours of footage for this epic three-hour PBS Nature series. We spent many, many months in bear country – piecing together the lives of these fascinating animals by observing and filming them, and by living in bear country, among the animals and people that share bear habitat. When Joe and I met nearly ten years ago (coincidentally in Alaska) our minds reeled with the possibilities for collaboration. A filmmaker and an ecologist, and a combined dream to have a huge impact for wildlife conservation through the magic of film. The opportunity to work with PBS Nature has been a dream, and has resulted in three beautiful episodes we hope you’ll love." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

No worries, Halil. I find it amusing to wake up to a DM from you beginning with "Here's a depressing story for you..." which evolves into geek solidarity. Par for the course, my friend. ;) - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

I did my master's research in a very rural area in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Hidalgo, Mexico. (I was looking at the effects of land-use intensity on the biodiversity of birds and plants, in case you were wondering.) Here are some of the pictures. #SaturdayFF

Potent new rat poisons killing California wildlife - Sacramento News - Local and Breaking Sacramento News | Sacramento Bee - http://www.sacbee.com/2011...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"As a result, toxins are rippling outward from warehouses to woodlands, from golf courses and housing complexes to marshes and nature sanctuaries. In California, the victims include bobcats, barn owls, red-tailed hawks, coyotes, kit foxes, kestrels and scores of other predators and scavengers. "Rodenticides are the new DDT," said Maggie Sergio, director of advocacy at WildCare, a Bay Area wildlife rehabilitation center that has responded to dozens of poisoning cases. "It is an emergency, an environmental disaster. We are killing nature's own rodent control."" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Trail camera records photos of two wolverines in Wallowa County - ODFW News - http://www.dfw.state.or.us/news...

"Magoun and Valkenburg have been surveying for wolverine in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest within and adjacent to the Eagle Cap Wilderness since January of this year. Funding and logistical support for the wolverine survey comes from an Oregon Conservation Strategy Implementation Grant(federal State Wildlife Grant), The Wolverine Foundation, Inc., the Wildlife Conservation Society, The Seattle Foundation and private individuals including Magoun and Valkenburg, Alaska residents, who use their own plane for aerial surveys. The wolverine was listed as threatened by the Oregon Game Commission in 1975, grandfathered as a state threatened species (May 1987) and reaffirmed by rule in 1989. It became a federal candidate species on Dec. 14, 2010." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

First Listen: Raphael Saadiq, 'Stone Rollin" : NPR - http://www.npr.org/2011...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Last month at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas, Raphael Saadiq visited our pop-up studio for a spirited performance of songs from his new album, Stone Rollin'. It was an impressive session, especially for the early-morning hour when we broadcast the show live on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic back in Los Angeles. In between sets, I spoke with Saadiq about the particulars of writing and recording the new album, performing with Mick Jagger at this year's Grammys, and the quality of musicians he surrounds himself with on the road. Saadiq exudes an aura of confidence, certainly as a musician and bandleader but also in his personal style and demeanor. I would like to think it's from all the experience he gained supporting and collaborating with some of the brightest minds in contemporary R&B over the years, but I really think he's just got it. You know, born with it. He did enjoy an early glimpse of the big time on the road with Prince as a teenager, and his forays into pop with Tony! Toni! Tone' and Lucy Pearl surely helped shape his character. But his new album, Stone Rollin', reveals a matured Raphael Saadiq front and center. It's his most concise record to date and a solid follow-up to his Grammy-winning 2008 album, The Way I See It. His music has come of age with a seasoned appreciation of the past, balanced with modern appeal, making him a fixture on our playlists at KCRW." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
"Stone Rollin' does what you hope for but don't always get in an album, taking you through a full cycle of moods and grooves. The languid swagger of "Good Man" seduces the listener with its dreamy orchestration, while the uptempo anthem "Radio" practically grabs you by the lapels and drags you to the dance floor — two wildly different musical directions, both executed beautifully. Seeing Saadiq perform these songs live with different arrangements in recent months, once with a full band and then in a stripped-down set, showed me how durable this album really is. These songs have been tested at their core — much of Stone Rollin' was honed on tour first — to make sure the music's vitality wasn't diminished in the recording process. As that SXSW session concluded, while contemplating the mystery of Raphael Saadiq's effortless cool, I realized what may be the secret to his "instant vintage" credo: sincere joy in making music and performing live. Stone Rollin' is a testament to that idea for everyone to enjoy." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

War Turning Mexican Kids Into Targets — Or Killers : NPR - http://www.npr.org/2011...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"With more than 35,000 people killed in drug-related violence over the past four years, thousands of kids have been orphaned. Others have been injured or killed. Last month in Acapulco, two boys, aged 2 and 6, were found shot to death along with their grandmother. Morales says the juvenile murder rate in Mexico has skyrocketed since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the drug cartels in December 2006. Murders among 15- to 17-year-olds jumped more than 150 percent, she says, between 2006 and 2008. Attacks in which kids are either directly targeted or caught in the crossfire have only increased since then." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
