The measles virus can cause serious disease in children by temporarily suppressing their immune systems. This vulnerability was previously thought to last a month or two; however, a new study shows that children may in fact live in the immunological shadow of measles for up to three years, leaving them highly susceptible to a host of other deadly diseases. https://www.princeton.edu...
The study, published in the journal Science, was led by researchers from the University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The study provides epidemiologic evidence that measles may throw the body into a much longer-term state of “immune amnesia,” where essential memory cells that protect the body against infectious diseases are partially wiped out.
“We already knew that measles attacks immune memory, and that it was immunosuppressive for a short amount of time. But this paper suggests that immune suppression lasts much longer than previously suspected,” said C. Jessica Metcalf, co-author and assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and public affairs at Princeton. “In other words, if you get measles, three years down the road, you could die from something that you would not die from had you not been infected with measles.”

Dovrei documentarmi, ma ai tempi del referendum il consenso era per ritoccare il capitolo V in senso opposto alla riforma del 2001, giustamente. Non ricordo come era stato formulato il quesito.

Derwent Pencil Museum tells the story of Keswick’s pencil industry from its origins in the 1550s. That’s when Borrowdale shepherds are said to have discovered that the black substance clinging to the base of an upturned tree was really useful for marking their sheep. The mineral was graphite, known locally as “wad”. In the 17th century some saw it as more valuable than gold, which led to a thriving black market, centred on a Keswick pub.
Fun fact:
During the second world war Keswick pencil-makers were commissioned by MI6’s Charles Fraser-Smith – the real-life Q – to design and make a secret pencil to help British airmen evade capture. The ordinary-looking pencils concealed miniature brass compasses and tightly rolled tissue-paper maps showing escape routes out of Germany.

Bello e equilibrato: mi ricorda i racconti di un mio ex-collega che era pediatra in California. Forse sarebbe meglio se il dibattito pubblico su questioni di questo genere fosse gestito da gente come l'autrice, che e' sul campo ogni giorno e vede e sente tutte le possibili obiezioni a pratiche mediche comuni e di buon senso.

Brava è brava, ma a me gli esercizi del genere non piacciono, sono balletti con due diagonali buttate in mezzo (ovviamente imho)(parlo da spettatrice, da ginnasta mi sarei leccata le dita a fare una cosa del genere, coreografia compresa che pompavamo molto per le esibizioni e mi piaceva farlo)

She gave me a list of a dozen or so books by Sir Karl that I should read before the meeting. After numerous faxes and calls, she set a date. When I asked for directions from a nearby train station, Mrs. Mew assured me that all the cab drivers knew where Sir Karl lived. “He’s quite famous.”
“Sir Karl Popper's house, please,” I said as I climbed into a cab at the train station. “Who?” the driver asked. Sir Karl Popper? The famous philosopher? Never heard of him, the driver said. He knew the street on which Popper lived, however, and we found Popper's home, a two-story cottage surrounded by neatly trimmed lawn and shrubs, with little difficulty.»
